Description
The Machine, Systems Integration Senior Engineering Specialist (system engineer) is responsible for the specification, design, and documentation of future machine control systems. The system engineer works directly with marketing, multi-discipline engineering teams, and Caterpillar product groups to develop innovative machine control solutions with consistent implementation across product lines. The position requires a blend of electrical, software, and mechanical engineering skills. Excellent interpersonal skills are also required to provide technical leadership and effectively guide teams through ambiguous situations.
Directing and participating in the design and development of complex engineering projects related to machine development to ensure products provide superior customer value in comparison to the competition in terms of features, performance, durability, and quality, with considerations of cost, manufacturing, velocity, and serviceability.
Job Duties
Collaborate with multi-discipline teams to define and develop products
Create earthmoving and paving machine control system designs
Work with other system engineering team members in the creation and application of system architectures
Specify system devices appropriate for the application
Create harness schematics describing connectivity between system devices
Define J1939 CAN communication interfaces including physical layer, bus loading, and messaging protocols
Define machine control system Ethernet and WiFi networks including layout, system usage, routing, security, and messaging
Facilitate cross-functional system cybersecurity assessments, and help lead teams through issue resolution
Contribute to the development of functionally safe machine control systems; apply principles such as risk & hazard analysis, machine performance level calculations, and FMEA
Serve as the technical point of contact for Caterpillar engineering teams
Provide technical input for grade control system verification testing
Generate and maintain professional grade design documentation
Developing solutions for complex technical engineering problems and may be accountable for the design or improvement of complex systems including advanced concepts that align the product to the product line strategy.
Understanding of customers’ needs and product application as well as the competitive products, and understanding cost drivers.
Keeping up-to-date with technology and developing increased technical breadth and/or depth.
Designing new products and contributing to establishing the product line strategy for the product group.
Examples include: defining the program, machine configuration, and modularity strategy; evaluating new products and competitive products; communicating technology to customers, team members, suppliers, and other units; supporting and advising other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers, suppliers, and other process partners.

Basic Qualifications
BS in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or similar program
Minimum five years of system engineering experience – application-level problem solving, schematics, communication protocols, system integration
Minimum five years of experience working with embedded systems hardware and software development processes
Proven record of turning market requirements into engineering specifications and other product development documentation
Demonstrable experience contributing to FMEAs
Top Candidates will also have
Experience with CAN and related analysis tools such as CANalyzer
Familiarity with Ethernet and WiFi networks, and related analysis tools such as Wireshark
Experience applying functional safety standards such as ISO 13849
Familiarity with vehicle embedded system cybersecurity principles and best practices
Solid analytical and problem solving skills, with attention to detail
Possesses technical leadership abilities; uses influence and experience in support of business objectives
Ability to work independently and as part of a global team
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Familiarity with functions, design, and usage of construction machinery

The location for this position is Peoria, IL
Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position.
This position will require less than 10% travel.
