This position will be an annually renewable faculty at the rank of instructor, Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The final rank and terms of appointment will depend on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate consistent with collegiate and University policies. The successful applicant will join our collaborative team of faculty and staff dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in education at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Population Medicine Department. The University of Minnesota food animal program utilizes a non-service based student centered targeted teaching model utilizing partner farms for students to gain experience in both individual animal and population medicine concepts. Duties of the position will be heavily focused on food animal education in a competency based medical education environment, primarily beef and dairy and may support other production species such as small ruminants and swine. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching of production animal medicine, including general individual production animal care (eg theriogenology, physical exam, case management, common procedures/management, field necropsy), general production animal medicine (eg production systems experience, advanced theriogenology, diagnostic planning and interpretation, record analysis, safe animal handling and restraint), and production animal field surgery. The position will also require career mentoring of mixed and food animal students. Additional duties may include participation in collaborative research and/or outreach. The actual time commitment to each of these duties is negotiable. Qualifications Required Qualifications: A doctorate of veterinary medicine (DVM, VMD) or equivalent foreign degree; Strong interpersonal and organizational skills Excellent written and oral communication skills Ability to teach in both, individual and team environments At least 2 years of experience within a clinical setting providing veterinary service to food animal production clientele (predominant beef & dairy and both Food Animal exclusive or Mixed Animal practice models are appropriate). Preferred Qualifications: Experience in North American production animal health and management systems including small ruminants and swine Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the state of Minnesota Eligibility for USDA level II accreditation Experience in contemporary veterinary and/or medical education, including the development of curricula Familiarity with diverse teaching methodologies e.g flipped classroom, jigsaw, problem-based learning, etc. Interest in lifelong learning and growth mindset Experience with formal or informal DVM student mentoring Competent in common computer and record keeping production systems Ability to communicate in Spanish with farm personnel would be a plus About the Department The College of Veterinary Medicine is located on the St. Paul campus which is a 10-minute shuttle bus ride from the Minneapolis campus. Classes at the College of Veterinary Medicine have 100 students per year (120 in Y3 and Y4) with approximately 25% of students tracking food and mixed animal medicine in their third and fourth year. The U of MN ranks near the top of Universities in terms of students interested in large animal medicine/surgery. The U of MN also provides teaching support through the Center for Educational Innovation. The College hosts a strong group of researchers and educators in food animal health and management. This teaching and research facility is built into a large dairy in southern Minnesota that serves as the transition facility for over 10,000 calvings per year.
