Successfully performs work as an individual, as a member of a single craft, or a multi-craft work crew. Performs work with minimal supervision.Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures.Performs fire watch duties supporting shipyard projects.Performs general clean up of the area before hot work begins.Works in a team environment under the supervision of a foreman.Properly cares for and safely uses tools and all company property.Obtains and maintains a fully pressurized fire extinguisher.Ensures the 1 " fire hose is readily available, and pressurized when needed.Ensures that hot work permit and potential marine chemist certificate are executed and posted before hot work begins.Checks general precautions on hot work permit prior to hot work beginning.Maintains awareness of fire alarm systems and procedures.Maintains safety procedures throughout area when performing roving or zone fire watch duties.Utilizes and applies fire-retardant cloth in hot work areas, as necessary.Responsible for proper utilization of fire extinguishers: CO2 and water pressure extinguishers.Responsible for replacing used extinguishers as soon as they have been discharged.ESSENTIAL SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESIncumbent performs similar work in all areas of the yard as the need arises.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:Ability to use tank signals to start work and air horn or whistle to convey warnings.Ability to pass fire watch certification which includes a four hour slide show and hands on demonstration of firefighting techniques.Recognizes and resolves unsafe working conditions and corrects by removing flammable materials or wetting down dry planks.Ability to set up and monitor the operation of fire watch services.Familiarity with the general layout of a vessel and its tanks, spaces, and other compartments.EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:High School diploma or GED preferred. 3 years relevant work experience.
