General Summary
The Charlottesville Fire Department is seeking candidates for the position of Firefighter/EMT. No prior fire or emergency medical service experience is necessary. Firefighters perform responsible service work in fire suppression, prevention, and emergency medical services (work includes but is not limited to pre-planning, community risk reduction, emergency medical care, specialized rescue, hazardous material mitigation, and other prevention activities.) Does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a company officer and/or battalion chief. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.
Firefighter and EMT training will be provided at time of hire/orientation. Being certified as a firefighter or EMT is not a requirement for hire.

Pay and Benefits:
During initial training, new recruits will be on a 40-hour per week schedule. After initial training, will be placed on a 56-hour schedule (24-hour shift). Typical starting base pay is $50,552.32 annually ($17.36 an hour based on a 56-hour schedule).
This is a full-time, non-exempt, position. The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Responds to alarms, drives and operates equipment and related apparatus and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, advancing lines, entry, ventilating and salvage work, extrication and emergency medical care of victims.
Performs cleanup and overhaul work, establishes temporary utility services.
Assists in maintaining and repairing fire apparatus and equipment, and cleaning fire station and grounds.
Checks fire hydrant flows.
Makes fire code inspections of business establishments and prepares pre-fire plans.
Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, inspects for gas leaks, secures vehicle accidents, etc.
Participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
Conducts station tours for the public, school and community demonstrations and program.
Answers, receives and transmits radio and telephone messages.
Functions as an EMT.
Required to drive/operate fire department vehicles, function as Bravo seat rider, or on special teams as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or GED equivalency required.

Must agree to and sign a "no tobacco/smoking' contract.
After one year of service Virginia Firefighter II and Virginia Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Required.
Position requires completion of a physical ability test (if not employed in a career fire department for a minimum of 12 months or completed nationally recognized Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within the past 12 months) and successful completion of further pre-employment evaluations such as virtual written test, panel interviews, Chief interview, and background investigation.
The Virginia State Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) requires all State EMS Licensed Agencies employees to comply with Virginia State Administrative Code 12VAC5-31-910 (Criminal or Enforcement History). These regulations define "certain crimes which present an unreasonable risk to public health and safety." Any individual convicted of the crimes listed as barrier crimes within these regulations is not employable as a firefighter/EMT.
Skills: General knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics; general knowledge of technical fire fighting principles and techniques; and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; general knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City; general knowledge of emergency care methods, techniques and equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees and the public; ability to keep simple records prepare reports; possession of mechanical aptitude; ability to perform heavy manual labor; skill in the operation of heavy emergency equipment.
Physical Conditions & Additional Information
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach and stretch with hands and arms with a full range of motion. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; jump; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and taste or smell.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 175 pounds. Wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus is required and each employee must be able to pass a fit for seal test. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places and confined spaces. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock and vibration. The employee is often exposed to excessively high temperature intensities and sudden temperature changes.
The noise level in the working environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activates when noise levels may be loud. The employee may be required to work rotating shifts, and is considered essential emergency personnel. Any personnel in this position are required to work during emergency situations and are subject to be recalled to work at any time.

RETIREMENT: The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS. There are certain provisions that must be met and the portability request must be executed within 18 months of vesting in the City's Plan.Pension:
Choose from two options:
A Defined Benefit Pension plan pays a monthly benefit in retirement using a defined formula based on the employee's earnings history, tenure of service, and age. Our plan has a 5 year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary.
A Defined Contribution 401a plan in which fixed contributions are paid into an individual's account by the employer, the contributions are invested, returns (positive or negative) are credited to the account, and the account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. The vesting schedule for our 401a plan is 33% after one year of service, 67% after two years of service, and 100% after three years of service. There is no required contribution from salary. (Note that: the Defined Contribution retirement plan is the only plan available for Library employees)
