Applicants must have 20 days experience withfarm/irrigation work and livestock care. Applicants hired must be ableto obtain a valid drivers license as driving on public roads may berequired. To meet minimum acceptable performance standards whenirrigating, the worker must, after a 10-day conditioning period, move anaverage of at least 48 40-foot sections of 3-inch pipe or 44 40-footsections of 4-inch pipe per hour under normal working conditions.
Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties related to theproduction of alfalfa, barley, corn, onions, onion seed, wheat andcattle. The majority of the work activities during the overall contractperiod, however, will be related to general farm work/irrigation/cropproduction. General Farm Work will include the followingresponsibilities: maintain, drive, attach and operate farmimplements/tractors/equipment to till soil, plant, cultivate, fertilizeand harvest crops; remove undesirable and excess growth from farmgrounds; maintain/repair fencing; perform general clean-up of farmareas; drive, load/unload farm trucks; operate motor bike or all-terrainvehicle in the course of performing duties; workers possessing theproper licensure may be asked to transport other farm workers.
Irrigation duties will include the following:
Hand lines: connect pipes; attach lines to water supply; turn valves tostart flow of water; disassemble lines and carry pipes across fields atspecified intervals; move pipes through freshly irrigated crops and/orplowed fields where mud may be deep at times; lift and carry pipesections weighing approximately 40 pounds on a sustained basis.
Wheel lines: start gasoline engines and operate controls to move linesacross fields at specified intervals.
Other Irrigation Duties: remove pipes/wheel lines from storage and layout/place in predetermined patterns in fields; lubricate, adjust, repairand replace parts such as sprinkler heads and drive chains using handtools; disassemble, service and store pipes/mainlines/wheel lines afterirrigation season. Duties related to the Production of Livestock willinclude the following: feed/water livestock; hoist/stack bales of hayonto wagon/truck.
Instruction, training, and general supervision will be provided by thefarm operator or a designated employee. However, the worker must performrequired duties without close supervision and listen to, understand, andfollow simple instructions of the employer or supervisor. The workerwill be required to return worn out tools, supplies, and equipmentbefore new ones will be provided. Most duties are performed out of doorsand entail exposure to heat, cold, dust, rain, and other environmentalconditions common in fields, including mosquitoes during certainseasons. The worker must crouch, bend, and lift and carry items weighingup to 100 pounds in the course of performing required activities.
Job duties may require a split shift, such as 6:00 to 11:00 AM and 6:00to 9:00 PM. Work hours may vary and there may be periods when little orno work will be available due to weather, time of year, and therequirements of the cropping program.
The worker may be offered work seven days a week, as farm work must beperformed seven days a week. The worker will be required, however, towork the minimum number of hours indicated in job listing. The workermay be offered more than the specified hours per day but is onlyrequired to work the hours specified. The worker may be requested, butwill not be required, to work on his/her Sabbath and/or on Federalholidays.
