This application encompasses general farm work andlabor on a fruit ranch. This job requires a minimum of three months ofgeneral farm labor, irrigation and general harvest duties. The liftingrequirement for this position is 60 pounds.
The anticipated hours listed represent the normal work schedule. Due tothe nature of these crops, weather, and the requirement to send crops tocustomers when needed, it is the prevailing practice to work more ordifferent hours than those listed
A worker may be offered more than the specified hours of work; however,the worker will not be required to work for more than the number ofhours specified in the job order, or on the workers Sabbath or Federalholidays. Saturday work may be required.
Workday start times vary depending on the weather. depending on the timeof year, hours of daylight, and production requirements. There may beperiods when little or no work will be available due to weather, time ofyear, and the requirements of the cropping or growing season. Workersmust be able to work varying shifts as required by the season and workperformed. Workers are notified of any change in the start times. Workmay be performed during rain, light snow, cold, freezing temperaturesand/or in high humidity and in temperatures over a 100 degrees F. Workermay be required to work in fields when crops are wet with dew/rain andshould have suitable clothing for variable weather conditions.
Duties to include:
Pruning and/or thinning: Apples, pears, apricots, plums, prunes,peaches, nectarines, cherry and grapes- The worker will hand prune treeson a motorized platform, from the ground and/ or utilizing a ladder. Theworker will utilize hand shears, hand loppers, hand saws and otherequipment. The worker may be required to selectively prune trees ofcertain size and color as instructed by their supervisor. Workers areexpected to possess or acquire pruning skills in order to identify andremove stubs, broken branches, downward growing branches, branches whichrub against each other, shaded interior branches, dead wood, shoots andsuckers with various equipment. Worker must be able to pick up andhandle a 10-12-foot orchard ladder weighing up to 60 pounds.
Harvest: Apples, pears, apricots, nectarines, plums, prunes, peaches,cherries and grapes- The worker will hand harvest fruit on a motorizedplatform, from the ground and/ or utilizing a ladder. The worker willattach the harness, bucket or bag and pick fruit. The worker will pickaccording to grade, color and size by grasping fruit with their handsand removing it from the tree in a motion that will not harm buds ontree branches. The worker will carry the harness, bucket, bag or boxesof up to 60 pounds. and will place the fruit into boxes or bins. Theworker must always exercise care to prevent bruising of fruit orbreaking of branches. Some workers may be tasked with examiningharvested fruit in bins and sorting out any fruit not meeting the grade,color, and size specifications. Workers must have the ability to set upand handle a 10-12-foot orchard ladder weighing up to 60 pounds.
Orchard/Tree Removal: Workers will use machinery and hand tools to takefruit trees out of the ground and remove tree debris, wood, andirrigation parts from orchard blocks.
Onion Bagging: Workers will use buckets or bags to move previouslylifted or dug onions from the ground and place onions into bags. Onionsbags will be left in the field to dry and cure. When the onions havedried and cured, the worker will move the onions in the bags into bins.Workers will use care when handling and transferring onions to notbruise or damage onions and take direction from supervisors or crewbosses.
Onion Weeding: Workers will use a hoe and hands to remove weeds fromonion fields.
Grape Training: Worker will walk through vineyards to train grapes tocordon wire, in addition to thinning, trimming, and watering grapes asneeded.
Grape Harvest: clipping and hand harvest of fruit.
Plant, weed, maintain, and harvest row crop vegetables.
Workers who have a valid drivers license and are insurable may alsodrive vehicles to haul crops, supplies, tools, or farm workers. Theseworkers may be offered additional hours for driving responsibilities.
Workers may never ride on agricultural equipment not designed for workrelated riding purposes or any other non-passenger intended equipmentunless instructed and authorized by the employer or supervisor to do so.
Irrigation Duties:
Irrigation Hand lines:
1.Connect pipes
2.Check the alignment of pipe and adjust for proper water distribution
3.Attach lines to water supply
4.Turn on pump
5.Turn valves to start flow of water
6.Disassemble lines and carry pipes across fields at specifiedintervals,
7.Move pipes through freshly irrigated crop and/or plowed fields wheremud may be deep at times
8.Lift and carry pipe sections weighing approximately 40 pounds on asustained basis.
1.Repair sprinklers on overhead cooling system.
2.Will load and mix chemicals in addition to operating tractors pullingair blast sprayers
3.Will install monitor, maintain, and repair irrigation system.
4.Spray fertilizer or pesticide solutions to control insects, fungus andweed growth, and
