Safety improvements may include low-cost improvements such as signing or more robust intersection improvements like signals, roundabouts, alternative intersections and/or curve reconstructions. This position utilizes and develops analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and move forward safety projects. Work includes analyzing data, utilizing analytical tools to identify appropriate improvements, developing working relationships with multiple bureaus, developing cost estimates and calculating benefit cost ratios. Helena – Traffic & Safety, Traffic Operations Section (Civil Engineer Specialist - 1 position):This position evaluates and recommends improvements to Montana’s highway system that directly impacts the traveling public. Traffic Engineers collect field data, sourced data, perform traffic engineering analysis using state of the art computer modeling to provide traffic operational and safety recommendations including innovative treatments some of which may be the first time ever tried in MT. Communicate the results and the methodology to a wide variety of audiences including both technical and non-technical stakeholders and the public using written, verbal, and visual tools. Review and evaluate traffic engineering work provided by outside consultants for both internal and external highway projects. Works as part of the Traffic and Safety Bureau team including Safety Management and Traffic Engineering Design and other outside divisions including Maintenance and Planning. Traffic engineering elements including but not limited to intersection traffic control evaluation, passing lanes, lane configuration including left and right turn lanes, traffic signal evaluations including timing and phasing, pedestrian studies, intersection/interchange configurations including innovative designs like restricted crossing U-turn corridor treatments and diverging diamond interchanges, as well as roundabouts, continuous green-T, and others. Helena – Bridge (Civil Engineer Specialist - 1 position):This position in the Bridge Bureau are responsible for designing and developing construction plans and documents for bridge replacement and rehabilitation projects. This work involves evaluating the problem or proposal; interpreting data; analyzing a structural system; selecting alternatives; documenting designs and calculations; preparing plans and writing construction documents. The employee commits the Department to a specific course of action through this design work. Decisions made, and methods used are based on the engineer's knowledge and judgement. The engineer is responsible for minimizing errors in their work and discovering errors in other’s work during design reviews.
