The Role
Specific to this position:
Candidate should have extensive experience in specifying, designing, selecting, installing, troubleshooting, and commissioning machinery and equipment used in a heavy industrial manufacturing shop setting including machine shops, heavy metal fabrication shops, pipe bending operations, foundry operations, sheet metal operations, and machine tool design. Candidate shall have extensive knowledge of machine operations, alignments, control systems, feedback devices, and machine operations. Candidate will be responsible for developing machine specifications, managing suppliers of equipment and services (engineering, construction, etc.), and coordinating with customers to assure all production requirements are met. Candidate must ensure all safety and ergonomic requirements of human/machine interface are optimized. Candidate will be expected to meet all project metrics of safety, quality, delivery, cost, and customer satisfaction.
Additional areas of responsibility include and are not limited to:
• Reviews and estimates design costs including equipment, installation, labor, materials, preparation, and other related costs.
• Inspects or directs the inspection of construction and installation progress to ensure conformance to established drawings, specifications, and schedules.
• Candidate preferred to have some electrical engineering experience with electrical infrastructure, and low voltage power distribution.
• Candidate preferred to have some electrical engineering experience with controls, ladder logic, programming and integration of robotic automation.
• Position will develop experience in electrical field engineering, technical support, reviewing vendor technical product data, system design and configuration management
• Position will develop experience in development of one-line diagrams; transformer sizing; MCC layout; conduit and cable sizing; and knowledge of NEC, arc flash analysis, coordination studies, and energy analysis.
• Responsibilities will include directing work assignments of engineering service providers and contractors to design and construct shipyard facilities in a safe manner for production use.
• Strong project management, communication, organizational and computer skills are essential.
• Ability to work independently and be a part of cross-functional teams in accomplishment of complex tasks is required.
• Ability to address technical, quality and business aspects of a project is essential.
• Ability to complete assigned tasks on schedule and within budget is required.
Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, equipment, systems, and networks. Designs electrical equipment, facilities, components, products, and systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
• Shipyard experience is desirable
• Heavy industrial facilities experience is desirable
• Knowledge of National Building Codes, Plumbing Codes, Mechanical Codes, AISC, ACI, NEC, ASME, NFPA, AWS, and OSHA regulations is preferred
• Experience mentoring less-experienced engineers and analysts.
• Strong project management, communication, leadership, organizational and computer skills are required.
• Experience in coordinating multi-trade projects including piping systems, controls, power, lighting, telecom, etc.
• Electrical Engineering degree is preferred
• Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) is preferred
