The position of Embedded Software Architect is within our Infectious Diseases business unit located on site in San Diego, California . This is a leadership position contributing to the design of our instrument platforms within the Instrument Software & Systems organization.
The person hired for this position will be a highly experienced embedded software leader with medical device experience who has demonstrated success architecting, designing, and developing embedded software, and capable of leading the development of a software platform across a system of products that may include IoT, cloud, and mobile devices, within a regulated quality management system.
What You’ll Work On
Provide overall technical leadership for embedded software development team. Owns the software architecture of the platforms.
Leads and contributes to platform activities with project teams across multiple business units and global sites.
Leads definition of technology, computing architecture, machine learning, and overall instrument software architecture across products that span IoT, cloud, and mobile devices.
Leads definition and application of reuse strategy with the goal of maximizing reuse of requirements, components and other SW/HW modules across different product lines.
Coordinates platform configuration management activities across different product lines.
Works closely with senior management to establish product development goals while ensuring market compatibility.
The person hired will be utilizing their time coding up to 40% depending on the phase of the project. This person will also be designing system flows/processes/integrations with other devices we use, etc.
Leads the analysis of system performance/behavior using simulation and modeling techniques as required.
Serves as a key technical contributor to requirements development. Collaborates to allocate system functions, define interfaces, resolve conflicting requirements, and develop requirements sufficient to enable delivery of the defined instrument architecture.
Advocates efficient, simple, and compliant mechanisms to build a robust and high quality instrument platform and product lines, taking into consideration elements in the life cycle management of the instrument platform and corresponding products.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science, Software Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
12+ years of experience in architecting, designing, developing, debugging, reviewing and testing embedded software.
Preferred Qualifications
At least 2 years leading teams of embedded engineers.
Experience leading development over the full software development lifecycle from concept to launch in the Medical Device industry (Point of care in IVD industry is highly preferred).
6+ years of experience architecting products for the Medical Device industry (Point of Care in IVD Industry highly preferred).
Experience operating in a leadership capacity delivering products within a quality management system.
Ability to lead engineering discussions and work as a bridge among different. engineering departments and global stakeholders.
Experience integrating systems that include IoT devices, mobile devices, and cloud solutions is preferred.
Experience in analyzing software performance, efficiency, and stability.
Domain expertise in languages such as C/C++, Python, Java.
Strong knowledge of operating systems such as Linux, (familiar with UNIX), RTOS, multitasking environments
Deep domain expertise in debugging systems and tools such as ICE, JTAG, build systems, IDE, SDK, development boards, and complier tool chains.
Solid knowledge of interfaces, network communication protocols, interface protocols, and data models.
Experience developing solutions employing machine learning algorithms.
Experience with hardware – software integration of embedded systems.
Experience developing software for microcontrollers, FPGAs and DSPs.
Experience developing device drivers to interface with hardware designs with multiple electro-mechanical and optical components (Stepper motors, DC motors, pumps, valves, CCD image sensors, CMOS sensors...).
Proficient with Medical Device regulations (ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 62304,21 CFR part 820.30-Design Controls, FDA SW Guidelines...).
Familiarity with Human Factors and Usability Engineering standards and guidelines (AAMI/ANSI HE75, ISO/IEC 62366, UCM 259760).
Experience with Jenkins, GIT, Static Analysis Tools and similar tools.
Protocols such as HL7, ASTM, and POCT1-A.
Experience with AI and ML.

The base pay for this position is $144,100.00 – $288,300.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
