About Electronics Technician

  Summary The primary purpose of the position is to assume responsibility for systems and devices assigned to the Facilities Service Line that critically impact patient and staff safety, and are highly visible items to medical center staff and patients, and crucial to medical center goals. This announcement has been extended until 1-31-24. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Major duties: Responsible for the inspection, installation, maintenance, calibration, documentation, and performance of no IT servers, computers, and electronic systems composed of multiple subsystems, and electronic equipment for the medical center. Responsible for initiating and preparing requisitions for purchase requests for parts and services required to perform maintenance, repair, and adaptation work. Develop criteria and design test setups and experiments to accomplish assignment. Responsible for knowing and judging the impact of repairs on patients, users, and other integral devices in a system. Using both manual and automated test equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeter, distribution/energy/harmonics analyzers, signal strength meters, de-gaussers, logic probes, frequency counters, etc. Works with VA contracting, engineers, vendors, and contractors to evaluate, plan, organize, execute, and assist on projects involving the development of the service line electronic systems. Participates in the conceptual planning, implementation, and final inspection of new systems, expansions, or upgrades of existing systems. Performs final evaluation of new equipment and advises manufacturers or users of redesign to solve unique operational deficiencies. Critically reviews design/specification, contractor documentation, and performance prior to acceptance by the government, and resolves design/quality problems with contract or VA personnel. Serves as a technical advisor and consultant concerning the purchase of new equipment. Acts as System Administrator on network and non network based systems owned and maintained by the Facility Service Line. Must establish and maintain documentation files for all systems and equipment for which they are responsible. Qualifications SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS 9 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Ability to run and terminate facility wiring such as Cat6, use hand/test equipment, computer skills of software, application, engineering, diagnostic, hardware, servers, and ability to configure and trouble shoot. Ability to recognize improper operation, locates the cause, and determines the best method to correct the defect. Ability and skill to design and construct specialized equipment and nonstandard devices as required. Ability to perform technical research, technical language, ability to decipher technical documents such as repair manuals and building blueprints. In-depth knowledge of a wide range of specific computer, software, server, and electronic/circuit principles and practices. Skills of soldering, wiring, and or installation of cabling for the networking of complex microcomputer and computer based equipment. -OR- EDUCATION: Have successfully completed 2 and ½ academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education, that is directly related to the work of the Electronics Technician position, such as electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or electronics technology. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Electrical Network Management Process Control Technical Competence IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: Work assignments require light to moderate physical effort. Work assignments involve prolonged sitting at computer, standing, stooping, bending, and working in cramped and awkward positions for prolonged periods. Electronic technicians continually carry between 10 to 80 pounds of materials and equipment but are required to be able to lift and carry items in excess of 80 lbs. when necessary; assistance is usually available with heavier items. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching and stooping is required. Occasionally climbing ladders. Work Environment: Incumbent will perform work indoors in well-lit and heated/ventilated spaces. Incumbent will also work outdoors and in poor lighting, above ceilings, in manholes, crawl spaces, and attics. The incumbent will be exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, strains, broken bones, patient behavioral emergencies, and burns due to electric shock heating elements or sub-zero temperature. Incumbent is required to utilize appropriately PPE in various scenarios including: contagious disease infectious areas, asbestos areas, radiation exposure areas, and others as required.
