You will install, maintain and repair master fire alarm systems, including in-building mass notification systems. You will analyze the operation of all modular components and adjusts or repairs as necessary to maintain fire alarm monitoring and transmitting equipment. You will determine and evaluate circuitry and interrelationships, interaction, and interconnections of the circuits, assemblies, and system. You will troubleshoot and repair malfunctions, improvising techniques and procedures as required to reach specified parameters. Qualifying experience must demonstrate the following comprehensive knowledge of operating electronic principles to troubleshoot, install, repair, and maintain malfunctions in complex electronic systems to include: 1) Interpreting complex drawings,specifications, and schematics of complete systems to specifically include the operation of fire alarm systems; 2) Reading and understanding circuit diagrams, cable route prints, and lines route map; 3) Troubleshooting and repairing difficult electrical problem by utilizing sound knowledge of the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code; 4) Reading and understanding the various types of wiring diagrams, sketches, blue prints and drawings; and 5) Troubleshooting and diagnosing non-functional or malfunctioning alarm systems and consoles, isolating any defective electronic components using meter, probes and other electrical/electronic test equipment. Must have a journeyman level knowledge of the trade theory, principles and practices of the following trades: - A recognized journeyman or craftsman-level qualification for FPS such as NICET; - A recognized journeyman or craftsman-level qualifications for fire alarm systems, such as a formalized labor organization-based journeyman training, or similar programs; - A qualification or license from any state (or local jurisdiction if delegated authority by the state) and supporting continuing education if required by the local jurisdiction. Preferred knowledge of UFC 3-601-02, Operations and Maintenance: Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Fire Protection Systems, NFPA 72 and NFPA 25. Occasionally, the incumbent will lift or pull heavy cable weighing more than 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. The incumbent may climb ladders, poles, towers and work aloft in bucket trucks, at ground level and in ground trenches or manholes. Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolds to perform work at various heights. Normal vision is required. Working Conditions: Some work is performed outside and may require exposure to prevailing weather conditions.Working conditions in this position vary with a portion performed in relatively pleasant surroundings and a portion performed on rooftops, in equipment rooms, under buildings and in confined spaces. Subject to perform work in areas with high noise levels where ear protection is required. Working in very hot and cold environments, poorly ventilated and lighted areas is occasionally required and in some instances work in these conditions is for the duration of the shift. The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust, dirt, grease and oil, and is subject to the possibility of scrapes, cuts, bruises, contusions, burns, electric shock and eye hazards. The incumbent will use protective equipment such as ear plugs, hard hat, flame retardant coveralls, non-conductive gloves and footwear. This position may require rotating shift work. Certain incentives (such as Recruitment, Relocation or Student Loan Repayment) may be authorized to eligible selectees. A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized. The incumbent may be required to serve as an on-call duty mechanic on a rotational basis. An on-call duty mechanic is required to carry a duty cell phone. The incumbent must remain available to respond onsite to after-hour emergencies within two hours, when on-call.
