FirstEnergy offers paid internships to qualified students actively enrolled in an accredited university or college.Responsibilities of a Communications Systems Design SpecialistSupports technology platforms delivering voice, video, and computing services to FE employees, contractors, and business partners.Core responsibilities include the architecture, engineering, design, implementation, regulatory compliance, and ongoing reliability of RF communication systems, telecommunications circuits and the supporting infrastructure including:DC power systemsBatteriesEmergency GeneratorsLoad calculations for AC/DC systemsAdditional job duties and responsibilities of a Communication Systems Design Specialist:Participate in installations and upgrades of communications technologies to ensure computing and network architecture solutions are properly implemented.Support the operational performance and maintenance of existing network circuits as well as design and delivery of new products/product enhancements.Ensure technical standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements are properly implemented on assigned projects.Maintain scope, schedule, and budget for assigned projects.Take ownership of assigned work and coordinates with internal and external groups on project delivery.Maintain functional knowledge of technology, technology changes, and the relationships of technology to emerging business requirements.As part of the Network Engineering & Operations (NEO) department, work across FirstEnergy to ensure that communications systems meet business needs and objectives.Ensure that change management procedures are followed properly.Applicant Requirements:Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor's degree program at an accredited university/college focusing on Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Radio Frequency Systems Engineering or related field, or related work experience.Class Standing - Graduating Fall 2026 or Spring 2027Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)Preferred Skills/Experience:Strong knowledge of the following:Basic Network ConceptsPC Usage, Windows 10 operating system preferredMS Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), MS OutlookBasic knowledge of common test equipment (e.g. DMMs, antenna analyzers, spectrum analyzers and RF wattmeters).Provide network circuit design, platform administration, and support.Environmental support systems for the technology platforms (e.g., HVAC, AC/DC power systems, batteries, generators, etc.)Core competencies to include interpersonal, communications (written & verbal), presentation, and drafting/drawing (Visio/CAD/GIS) skills.Circuit design and drawing management tools.Tools used to monitor, control & track the performance of these circuits and manage the work.Project management concepts and tools.Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA); Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).Ideal Candidate:Highly motivated to work independently and productively and learn quicklyMust be organized and work well with constant priority changesProven team player, contr
