The Principal Gift Program is a centralized program led by UMF that assures the coordination of decentralized principal gifts efforts across the University of Minnesota. The principal gift portfolio, also known as PGW, includes donors and prospects with affinity and ability to contribute gifts of $5M or more. Responsibilities include front line fundraising and portfolio building work to enhance our principal gift level donor pipeline. This will be done through the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of leadership and principal gifts from various sources including alumni, individuals, and family foundations. Please note that candidates will be considered for the Principal Gift Officer or Sr. Principal Gift Officer level based on their stated qualifications. Starting salary: 3b: $97,000-115,000 or 4a: $115,000-144,000 based on experience. Responsibilities: Portfolio Management and Engagement (75%) Plan, organize and implement gift strategies to maximize principal giving opportunities. Manage a portfolio of 30-50 principal gift prospects and donors ($5M and above), either as Principal Lead or Primary Manager. At the direction of the Senior Director, Principal Gifts, establish and achieve annual performance metrics aligned with the principal gift role. Take timely and strategic steps in moving prospects through the principal gift cycle of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Lead proactive collaborative efforts to develop effective and coordinated strategies for prospects shared by more than one academic unit. Collaborate with development officer partners to the identification and refinement of compelling gift opportunities to connect principal gift donors' interests with the University's priorities. Develop an annual plan of work, including specific fund raising, prospect development and programmatic goals with an emphasis on achieving established standards and metrics. Initiates and oversees the development of proposals and written material in support of specific principal gift fundraising initiatives. Ensure annual requests for financial support are presented to all donors and prospects at the appropriate time and that all requests are closed on schedule and acknowledged in a timely fashion. As needed to advance the donor strategy, create and execute events and activities for cultivation, stewardship, and solicitations to advance principal Organizational Collaboration and Strategic Leadership (25%) Foster an environment of collaboration and confidence with senior development, organization and university leaders to build confidence and foster collaboration when working on principal gift donor prospects. In collaboration with the Senior Director and Prospect development team, help develop a strategy to build a pipeline for new six and seven-figure prospects from outside of the organization's existing donor pool. Drive development of new stewardship strategies and help to create a more unified stewardship experience for principal gift donors. Collaborate with the prospect development team to plan and lead prospect strategy meetings that include all members of the prospect team. Ensure timely and accurate follow up occurs after each strategy meeting. Collaborate with the Senior Director and AVP to help identify big ideas for potential funding based on donor interests, while assessing alignment with university vision and priorities and navigating internal feasibility. Participates in special projects, as assigned and handles other duties and assignments s required. This position will require occasional travel, working on evenings, and weekends for Foundation events and activities. Five or more years of experience in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major and principal gifts; or experience in marketing, sales, public relations, financial advisement or related field with emphasis on relationship cultivation and solicitation of individuals/businesses. Demonstrated experience in recruiting, training and managing successful activities of volunteers in major gift work. Demonstrated ability to analyze situations and develop plans, and to initiate and implement programs. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting as a leader, participant and facilitator. Demonstrated knowledge of basic business terminology, financial matters and the ethical, legal, and tax-related issues regarding the solicitation, transfer, and management of charitable gifts. Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate to a wide array of audiences. Proficient in the use of PC software, such as Microsoft Office, and database familiarity. Preferred: Seven or more years of experience in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major and principal gifts. Development experience with capital campaign experience in a large academic or health-related Commitment to and enthusiasm for fundraising in higher education and/or experience working within the environment of a large, public institution or organization.
