  This member of the Supply Chain leadership team exemplifies The US Foods Way in leading the organization to cutting-edge solutions that support the customer and the delivery of routing solutions. The Director Routing Optimization develops the strategy and envisions, designs and implements field-focused processes and initiatives to maximize routing performance across US Foods. This role is responsible for delivering routing processes that meet transportation needs for service, cost and safety while reducing variability across markets. In leading the strategic vision of transportation initiatives, this skilled collaborator builds strong relationships with region and market leaders, aligning field-based stakeholder needs with cross-functional business objectives.

  RESPONSIBILITIES

  Develop and gain alignment for routing strategy and the US Foods Way for routing.

  Work closely with the field for implementation of the strategy across the network.

  Work with the Sr Director of supply chain technology and deployment to identify new tools for step change improvement in routing .

  Implement ongoing Routing excellence and KPI performance improvements across markets.

  Identify opportunities to maximize performance, delight the customer and minimize costs; develop process improvement plans and analyze potential enhancement impacts; oversee activation teams, who lead market fixes when KPIs go red.

  Design and prioritize the implementation of Routing plays to streamline transportation and improve performance, optimizing capacity and on-time performance.

  Incorporate market and industry research, best practices benchmarking and market-specific constraints into routing improvement strategies, KPI’s, KPI tracking and into performance-improvement plans and tactics.

  Partner with cross-functional teams, particularly sales, to optimize transportation and facility networks, creating a cost-effective, high-performance delivery model.

  Update business process documentation, including workflows and Operations Foundations narratives and procedures.

  Promote a continuous improvement culture within routing by recruiting, retaining and developing world-class, diverse talent.

  Develop and mentor direct reports through communication, training and strong leadership.

  Inspire the team through transparency and open dialog, modeling The US Foods Way.

  Set performance expectations that drive sustainable, predictable business results.

  Support play communication and execution, related field associate training, and quarterly reviews of key focus areas, strategies and pressing topics.

  Work with the Program Office to resolve questions around play certification and to ensure plays as written are actionable and in-line with overall US Foods customer experience strategy​ and objectives.

  Contribute to policies, processes and performance metrics designed to track the implementation and impact of Routing improvement initiatives, including the documentation and escalation of field feedback on plays and play deployment.

  Bring routing expertise and best practices to the markets on a regular cadence.

  Partner with peers to evaluate transportation projects including fleet design, driver productivity, routing optimization, engineering, manpower and workflows.

  Design and maintain the transportation scorecard and metrics to ensure business objectives are obtained by all transportation operations.

  Bring the US Foods way to fix markets that are lagging in performance.

  Other duties as assigned by the Sr. Director Transportation & Routing.

  Supervises Routing Optimization Managers, Analysts and Routers.

  RELATIONSHIPS:

  Internal:

  Transportation Safety, Supply Chain, Program Office​, Operations Excellence, Sales, Merchandising and Field Operations leaders; Activation Team leads; regional, area and market field leaders; local and national sales leaders; Human Resources business partners

  External:

  Professional networks, industry organizations and/or consultants focused on routing and transportation optimization and leading practices

  Customers and outside vendors

  *QUALIFICATIONS  *

  *Education/Training:  *

  Bachelor’s degree in business, transportation and logistics, operations management, supply chain management, or in another relevant field.

  *Related Experience/Requirements:  *

  8+ years of progressive experience in business leadership, with a focus on strategy development and implementation; experience working within a transportation environment highly valued; food industry experience a plus.

  People management experience required.

  Routing expertise and knowledge of implementation.

  Versed in transportation and routing leading practices and related performance metrics.

  Strong communication skills and experience influencing peers and senior leaders. 

  Competency identifying/establishing, implementing and sharing operational best practices.

  Experience leading projects that required coordination across team boundaries in large, multi-function, cross-geographic, matrixed organizations.

  Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  Industry knowledge: In-depth knowledge of distribution operations, including routing and/or transportation, and of related federal, state and local regulations – preferably in the foodservice or transportation industry.

  Program Management: Strong program management skills and knowledge of program management principles, methodology and tools; able to plan and lead the execution of all aspects of a program with a sense of urgency, including scheduling, resources, scope, budget, risks/issues, communication and reporting.

  Strategic Thinking: Brings creative approaches to risk diagnosis and mitigation; active learner able to quickly understand relevant risks associated with functional initiatives.

  Capacity Planning: Allocates responsibilities appropriately and effectively leverages resources to meet anticipated deadlines and desired business outcomes.

  Problem Solving Skills: Highly analytical with strong problem-solving skills, including identifying and working with team members to avoid or remove roadblocks.

  Cross-Functional Collaboration: Builds strong cross-functional relationships quickly to align on actions and resources required and to mutually accomplish company goals.

  Adaptability: A leader who can navigate the organization through complex and diverse situations; comfortable with ambiguity.

  Coaching/Mentoring: Develops and inspires team member mindsets and capabilities.

  Influence/Communication Skills: Strong presence and open communication skills, effective at all levels of the organization; inviting and effectively responsive to questions and concerns; builds credibility and authority when working with indirect reports, peers and senior leaders; effectively translates business strategies and objectives into Routing priorities and effectively articulates desired outcomes, tactics and behaviors.

  The following information is provided in accordance with certain state and local laws. Compensation depends on experience, geographic locations, and other factors permitted by law. In Colorado, the expected compensation for this role is between $124,300 and $145,000. In New York, the expected compensation for this role is between $138,400 and $151,000. In California, the expected compensation for this role is between $131,500 and $148,000. In Washington, the expected compensation for this role is between $131,500 and $148,000. This role is also eligible for annual incentive plan bonus.
