Dead River Company is seeking a Director of Risk Management & Safety Operations to join our leadership team.
This position is based out of South Portland, ME.

Position Summary:
As a key contributor to the Company’s leadership team, the primary responsibility of this role is to minimize operational risks by recognizing key risk indicators, defining risk mitigation strategies, and communicating areas of potential risk and liability across the organization.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Responsible for design and management of the Company’s complete safety and compliance program
Manages the Manager of Safety and Compliance
Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to environment, transportation, OSHA and NFPA.
Responsible for promoting a safe working environment and minimizing risks by recognizing, defining, and communicating areas of potential risk.
Strives to eliminate lost work hours due to personal injuries and reduce accidental damages to vehicles and property.
Strives to lower the costs of liability and workers’ compensation insurance by reducing potential exposure to losses.
Oversees the development of company business continuity and disaster recovery plans.
Responsible for design and management of Company's complete insurance program including but not limited to Property, General Liability, Auto Liability, Workers Compensation, Crime & Fiduciary, Marine Liability, Railroad Liability, Cyber, Terrorism and other related lines.
Manages the Manager of Insurance
Provides information and assistance to leadership on all matters related to risk mitigation.
Develops policies and procedures for loss prevention and risk control in support of company objectives.
Responsible for liability claims and litigation management.
Works directly with senior management and various functional leaders to navigate contractual, compliance, risk, and insurance issues.
Responsible for assisting management on all legal and regulatory matters related to: Environmental, DOT, NFPA, OSHA and state regulatory agencies.
Responds on behalf of the Company on inquiries by regulatory agencies.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
Prior business experience preferred.
Three or more years of experience practicing law in the state of Maine preferred.

Work Environment:
Approximately 80 percent of the Director’s time will be in an office setting performing administrative duties; 20 percent is in the field. This position requires travel to all our locations throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont.
