About Director of Orientation and New Student Programs

  GENERAL PURPOSE:

  Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Orientation and New Student Programs, the Director for Orientation and New Student Programs provides leadership and oversight for the development and implementation of a comprehensive new-student orientation program and first-year programming for incoming first-year, and transfer students designed to strengthen the connection between students and the University throughout their first year. This position supervises student staff members on the Orientation and New Student Programs team. The Director also oversees and administers all assessments for Orientation and New Student Programs.

  JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  IMPLEMENTATION AND PLANNING OF ORIENTATION PROGRAMS

  Manages operations of the Orientation and New Student Programs Office.

  Directs, plans and executes the summer, fall, and spring Orientation and Welcome Week programs for first-year, transfer, exchange and commuter students and their families totaling more than 3,500 participants annually.

  In collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Orientation and New Student Programs, plans and executes pre/early arrival programs for incoming new students.

  Assists with providing guidance and direction for new student programmatic areas, including orientation, retention, and transition, within Orientation and New Student Programs.

  Develops and manages virtual orientation content for new students and families.

  Facilitates orientation sessions and coordinates the daily set up of rooms and spaces for the programs.

  Recruits and works with offices on campus to ensure that Orientation presentations and speakers have appropriate guidance and knowledge.

  Assists with Enrollment Management programs, including supporting admissions, orientation, transition, and enrolled student programming.

  Designs and conducts staff development and training including Orientation Leaders, Welcome Week Leaders, and Welcome Week.

  Volunteers as well as all participating student organizations and College staff volunteers.

  Collaborates extensively with the Communications and Marketing Specialist to create schedules and materials for various promotional and marketing efforts including print publications, website, social media and email to support Orientation programs.

  Partners with Information Technology Services, the Blackboard team and Admissions regarding usage of Blackboard and Slate CRM. Keeps up to date with the latest advancements in incorporating technology into all Orientation programs.

  Represents the Orientation Office at on-campus and off-campus events.

  Cultivates relationships with campus and community partners as they relate to orientation programs.

  Provides unit-wide quality assurance and subject matter expertise ensuring ongoing exceptional quality and customer service.

  IMPLEMENTATION AND PLANNING OF NEW STUDENT PROGRAMS

  Plans and executes programming for new students and their families.

  Plans and executes the Ever Better Beginnings program, a cross-divisional series of programming and events in the Fall semester.

  Cultivates relationships with campus and community partners as they relate to new student programs.

  BUDGET AND FINANCIAL

  Manages the Orientation & New Student Programs and Convocation budgets ensuring resources are used effectively and cost-savings are maximized.

  Responsible for overall ledger oversight and expense processing for both internal and external financial transactions.

  LEADERSHIP & SUPERVISION

  Leads recruiting, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of student Orientation Leaders, Welcome Week Leaders, Welcome Week volunteers and College staff volunteers including assignments and ensures all responsibilities are fulfilled.

  Coordinates and implements orientation leader training, arranging for facilities to accommodate training and programs and coordinating day-to-day orientation leader logistics.

  Serves as liaison to Student Employment.

  Coordinates recruitment, hiring, and training of graduate student interns.

  Serves in the absence of the Assistant Dean on various initiatives

  RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT

  Monitors the latest trends in orientation, college transition, and retention programming.

  Implements an annual assessment of the Orientation program and New Student Program activities.

  Collects and analyzes Orientation user data to evaluate its performance and inform changes to current and future iterations of the curriculum.

  Assist in departmental assessment efforts to continually enhance services based on data-driven decisions.

  Benchmarks Rochester programs against comparable programs.

  Researches and proposes new programs for new students.

  COMMITTEE AND CONFERENCE PARTICIPATION

  Represents the Orientation and New Student Programs office on select departmental and divisional committees as well as at national conferences and professional meetings, as needed.ADDITIONAL DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

  Assists the Assistant Dean in accomplishing department goals, and represents the Assistant Dean in their absence, and in other capacities as needed.QUALIFICATIONS:

  Bachelor’s degree required

  Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education, or related area preferred or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience preferred.

  At least four years of work experience in higher education preferably with direct experience in orientation, transition programs, and event planning or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

  Required:

  Must possess strong organizational, leadership, and management skills including budget management, planning large-scale programs, program development, evaluation, assessment, and marketing.

  Proven success in managing and coordinating multiple concurrent projects.

  Impeccable attention to detail.

  Excellent problem-solving, written, analytical and verbal communication skills.

  Experience in providing high-quality customer service.

  Strong public speaking skills.

  Ability to work in a diverse environment and be sensitive to issues of diversity and inclusion.

  Proven ability to implement and utilize technology to manage programs and personnel.

  Able to use Microsoft Office Suite.

  Must be available to work nights and weekends during major programs.

  Pay Range

  Pay Range: $62,200 - $93,300 Annually

  The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
