This position is responsible for the leadership, planning, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive development strategy. In addition, the position is responsible for securing significant philanthropic support through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gifts from various sources including UMR alumni, corporations/foundations, and community members committed to the future success of the UMR campus. Reporting to the Chancellor of the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) with a dotted line reporting relationship to a senior development leader at the University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF), this position also includes oversight of the alumni relations and annual giving program through the management of a staff member responsible for alumni relations and annual giving. Salary: No less than $105,000 annually. Development Activities (60%) Maintain responsibility for a major gift ($25K or more) portfolio. Utilize various giving methods such as current, deferred giving, and non-cash gifts. Work with UMF staff, and other key Campus and University staff to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. The annual goals/ metrics expectations for this role are $750k in gift production, 6 funded solicitations and 10 delivered solicitations, 125 visits, 15 qualifications and a recommended portfolio size of 100. Develop an annual work-plan with a focus on establishing a major gift fundraising program to support key UMR priorities. Create fundraising, prospect development, and programmatic goals with an emphasis on achieving established standards and metrics for the position. Collaborate with the Chancellor and other academic and administrative leaders in identifying and defining the full range of fundraising priorities; prioritize these opportunities and develop strategies and tactics for prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, as well as ongoing development activity. Develop, in consultation with the Chancellor, strategies and next steps to effectively cultivate and solicit top prospects. Engage and utilize Chancellor and other UMR academic leaders in the cultivation and solicitation of top prospects. Provide leadership and strategic planning direction for alumni relations and annual giving efforts to ensure that activities are seamlessly integrated with UMR's mission and vision and also meet the needs of the varied prospect base of alumni and non-alumni constituencies.. Engage with community members and alumni, both individually and at events, to enhance support for the campus within the region and beyond. Oversee the recruitment, training and management of volunteers as needed to support fundraising activities, including campaigns. Provide the highest level of support to the members of the campus's volunteer leadership for their activities on behalf of UMR; ensure that their volunteer experience is meaningful, productive and enjoyable, and that their intellectual and emotional connection to campus, the U of M, and each other is strengthened. Leverage the loyalty and commitment of the alumni population as well as other key supporters in order to identify and cultivate individuals who can become participants in the life of the campus and provide financial support at leadership levels; build a compelling case for philanthropy. Engage and train key staff to interact effectively with potential donors and other key individuals to achieve critical initiatives. Collaborate with other external relations functions such as marketing, communications, and event services to ensure a coordinated, unified approach to relationships with all constituents. Clear an coordinate prospective donors through appropriate UMF procedures to ensure effective solicitation of the donor that maximizes the gift to the University and the donor's satisfaction with the institution. Complete and file timely and accurate reports of donor/prospect contacts by utilizing databases, employing discretion while recording information of relevance to appropriate individuals. Program Leadership (25%) Lead the planning, implementation, and assessment of the development program for the campus, collaborating with the UMR Chancellor, University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF), and other key University and Campus leaders. Develop an annual work-plan with a focus on establishing a major gift fundraising program to support key UMR priorities. Create fundraising, prospect development, and programmatic goals with an emphasis on achieving established standards and metrics for the position. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of UMR's vision and philanthropic priorities to effectively and compellingly present its case to prospects and donors. Proactively manage the budgeting process by anticipating costs and prioritizing needs. Staff Leadership (15%) Manage staff responsible for alumni relations and annual giving. Provide work direction for departmental activities and include feedback on results, planning and developmental areas. Set clear direction and priorities for future success. Promote excellence through well-defined and measurable goals; inspire and motivate staff within the context of UMR's strategic priorities. Promote a culture of excellence, collaboration, and professional growth. Manage the team, including recruitment, retention, performance management, development, and coaching of staff. Actively mentor and train staff, providing professional learning to build capacity and expertise. Qualifications Required: Bachelor's degree. Five years of development experience with demonstrated ability to promote and successfully solicit major gifts; or experience in marketing, sales, public relations, financial advising, or related field with emphasis on relationship cultivation and solicitation of individuals/businesses. Preferred: Advanced degree in marketing, business, public relations, communication, public administration, or related area. Eight years of professional development experience. Successful major campaign and planned giving experience in higher education. Knowledge of and commitment to the Rochester civic and philanthropic communities. Two years of experience managing staff and department budgets. Experience in recruiting, training and managing volunteers. Strong commitment to a major land-grant/research university in a small city and/or a healthcare environment. Demonstrated knowledge of basic business terminology, financial matters, and the ethical, legal, and tax-related issues regarding the solicitation, transfer, and management of charitable gifts.
