About Director, Injury Prevention and Control Program

  The Director of the Injury Prevention & Control Program works closely with the Division Director and is a leader in the Division of Violence and Injury Prevention. The Program Director is responsible for the overall direction of program and policy activities, budget oversight of relevant accounts, supervision of unit staff, and extensive collaboration with key stakeholders. The Program Director manages the program’s budget, assuring that spending plans are prepared, contracts are in place, and spending is occurring according to all requirements. This responsibility includes oversight of federal grants and assuring that grant goals are met, and that spending is in compliance with federal requirements and budget approval.The Director will serve as the Department’s primary expert on unintentional injury issues and develop collaborative relationships with internal and external partners serving in leadership positions on a number of statutory bodies, and primary responsibility for convening and leading a number of key multidisciplinary injury prevention stakeholder groups. This position has supervisory responsibilities for key professional staff and will be responsible for assessing the Unit’s work, assigning staff responsibilities, and helping staff to develop work plans to meet developing needs and priorities. The Bureau of Community Health and Prevention and the Division of Violence and Injury Prevention acknowledges the history of structural racism and its impact on health. We are committed to improving the quality of life for all Commonwealth residents while eliminating the inequities that threaten the lives of communities of color who are disproportionately impacted by violence and injury, and experience worse outcomes. Structural racism also negatively effects healthy development of children and youth. The Unit Director will actively lead their team to apply this framework to all aspects of their work. _Duties and Responsibilities(these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_ * Develops and implements intervention strategies, both programmatic and in policy, with focus areas of childhood injury, older adult falls, poison prevention, and transportation safety. * Ensures the unit meets all programmatic grant goals and requirements; leading the drafting of grant-related written materials including reports to the funding agency; and working with the IPCP’s epidemiologist to assure the appropriate evaluation of activities. * Acts as Project Investigator for the unit’s multi-component grant from the Centers for Disease Control known as the Core State Injury Prevention Program (Core SIPP). * Oversees and supports staff in fulfilling grant deliverables, carrying out activities guided by the unit strategic plan, and completing other projects as needed. * Manages contracts including those with the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Poison Center at Boston Children’s Hospital. * Advises the Division Director on significant and strategic policy and program opportunities, particularly those that will address disparities/health inequities. * Provides oversight of the unit budget, including decision making regarding funding initiatives. * Develops and implements a comprehensive injury prevention strategic State plan that will guide the work of IPCP in the coming years. * Works collaboratively with other staff and initiatives within the Division of Violence and Injury Prevention. _Preferred Qualifications:_ * Demonstrated ability to applying a health equity lens to public health approaches, including racial equity, that address the role of race on health inequities and how they relate to injuries. * Strong understanding of social determinants of health and a structural analysis of social determinants of health that impact individuals’ ability to be healthy. * Demonstrated ability to applying a health equity lens to public health approaches, including racial equity, that address the role of race on health inequities and how they relate to injuries. * Knowledge of principles and practices of state policies and management with a community and health equity lens. * Demonstrated ability to use methods and techniques in the collection and analysis of data and demonstrated experience in applying data analysis to injury and violence surveillance and program data sets, including the ability to analyze and determine the applicability of data (or lack of data) and to draw meaningful conclusions. * Demonstrated ability to effectively manage numerous projects simultaneously. * Experience with budget management; contract management. * Experience supervising professional staff including helping staff to develop work plans that appropriately prioritize activities, providing critical and supportive feedback, and assisting in managing significant workloads. * Grant-writing and reporting experience. * Demonstrated ability to exercise sounds judgement in politically sensitive situations. _About the Department of Public Health:_ The mission of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is to prevent illness, injury, and premature death, to assure access to high quality public health and health care services, and to promote wellness and health equity for all people in the Commonwealth.
