This job is based in Helena, Montana, a centrally-located town of 30,000 with outstanding recreational and cultural opportunities. Job Duties: The Deer-Elk Coordinator will oversee the development and implementation of the Wildlife Division's management program for deer and elk. Within the department, the incumbent will work cooperatively with area wildlife biologists, regional wildlife managers, and the research staff in preparing wildlife management and hunting season recommendations, preparing deer and elk management plans, communicating department programs and policies, implementing disease management programs for CWD, brucellosis, and other diseases, informing the general public in wildlife matters related to these species, and designing and conducting field investigations on deer and elk populations and habitats. The position will coordinate deer and elk program activities with other wildlife bureaus and other divisions as needed. The incumbent will need to establish and maintain good working relationships with Montana's highly engaged public of landowners, outfitters, hunters, and other stakeholders. The deer-elk coordinator will be asked to represent the department on interagency working groups, such as the W AFW A Mule Deer Working Group. The incumbent will need to have a good mix and balance of administration, science, communication, writing, and people skills. Minimum Qualifications: The knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the duties of this position are usually acquired through a Master's Degree in Fish and Wildlife Biology, Range Management, Zoology, or Fish and Wildlife Management, Biology or a closely related biological field including completion of a field research project presented in a successfully defended thesis. Equivalent experience is defined as five (5) years of progressively responsible experience as a wildlife biologist or senior wildlife technician, in addition to successful completion of a research effort that includes: 1. Literature review and development of a problem statement and or hypothesis for a particular issue. 2. Development of a detailed study plan or sampling protocol for a field-oriented project based on the above-noted hypothesis. 3. Data collection and the effective management of data with an appropriate application. 4. Interpretation and analysis of data, including a quantitative assessment of that information. 5. Completion of a final report in a peer-reviewed publication or a publication comparable to a refereed journal. 6. If appropriate to the project, formulation of any recommended changes in management prescriptions or actions. 7.
