About DC Design Manager for Region (AMER), Data Center Engineering

  Description

  Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Regional Design Manager to join its design team. As a Regional Design Manager, you will be part of a global engineering leadership team, comprised of highly effective Architects, Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Security and Control Engineers. AWS self-performs engineering on the majority of our capacity delivery projects. This unique vantage point allows the Design Managers to maintain a close connection with project details and drive project outcomes. You will have impact on the design direction and ability to improve design delivery for an entire region, while establishing design procedures and protocols for the development of future systems. This role is an opportunity to collaborate with many facets of the AWS organization, external engineering resources and regulatory agencies. This role sits within the global team responsible for the design and operation of critical Data Center facilities located throughout the world.   Key job responsibilities

  • Lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver quality and globally consistent data center designs across Americas within schedule and cost constraints while maintaining a high level of quality.

  • Able to influence internal stakeholders, internal customers (operations), and external consultants to address program wide design changes

  • Manage escalations from the design team and collaborate with procurement, construction and external consultants

  • Effectively communicate with AWS Leadership and external project partners, including the creation, tracking & reporting of metrics related to schedule, cost, and quality Throughout the lifecycle of the project.

  • Think outside of the box to find innovative solutions prior to and during the construction process to reduce contract change orders without negative impacts on quality or reliability.

  • Drive speed, quality, and simplification by eliminating rework loops, reducing and automating manual work and hand-offs, identifying and implementing best practices across the business, and minimizing process variability through standardization and automation.

  • Create global best practice documentation and facilitate sharing across the globe.

  • Ability to motivate others to achieve impeccable quality in an explosive growth and deadline-driven environment.

  • Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with design consultants. Anticipated travel not to exceed 25%. International travel may be needed.

  Basic Qualifications

  5+ years experience managing staff / consultants / vendors

  5+ years of design experience in commercial / industrial / other complex technical projects.

  5+ years of Mission Critical facility design experience.

  5+ years leading sub-consultants and project teams.

  Bachelor or Master’s degree (MBA, Engineering, Architecture, Construction)

  Preferred Qualifications

  Professional Engineering/Architecture License

  3+ years of large-scale Data Center facility design experience.

  10+ years of experience directly related to data center design, construction, operations, and/or facility maintenance.

  Proficiency in building codes, regulations, and standards including IBC or equivalent.

  Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.

  Solid working proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and MS Office Suite.

  Direct experience with design or construction administration of a variety of electrical distribution systems ranging from low voltage to high voltage.

  Direct experience with delivering modular data centers design projects, including procurement and commissioning of facilities

  Functional knowledge of industry standards, environmental codes, building codes and safety standards including International Building Code

  Ability to communicate complex technical issues to senior leadership or non-engineers, develop basic business case financial projections and create performance metrics

  Direct experience in negotiating with regulatory agencies regarding departures from building code and construction change orders

  Working Knowledge of Sharepoint, BIM/Revit, Salesforce and Procore

  Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $93,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
