Your company
Apify (https://apify.com) builds software tools and cloud infrastructure that helps individuals, startups, and the world’s largest companies leverage the full potential of the web—the largest source of information ever created in the history of humankind. Our systems process billions of web pages and hundreds of terrabytes of data every month. We help our clients improve their products, marketing, and business decisions using structured data from the web or automating repetitive tasks. We also help non-profit projects such as Hlídač Shopů (https://www.hlidacshopu.cz/) or Thorn (https://www.thorn.org/) , which uses Apify to find missing children.
We’re looking for a Data Team Lead to join us and help take our analytics and BI to the next level.
Your role
This role offers the opportunity for a leader to take responsibility for our in-house data infrastructure and analytics team. This will include shaping team structure and working processes, prioritizing workload to deliver the most important insights, and driving data-informed decision-making in the company.
You will join and lead our existing data team, which currently consists of three data analysts / analytical engineers (junior, medior, and senior), with a fourth one (senior web analyst) starting in February. The role is roughly 60-40 split between team management and individual contribution work. You will work closely with our senior management team and other team leaders to ensure their teams can take advantage of insights from data.
The role will also bring interesting challenges. We’re not an e-commerce company with a straightforward ‘customer - item - order - payment - delivery’ data model. The Apify platform is open to many use cases involving diverse datasets (usage-based billing, multiple pricing models, in-house vs. community Actors, and more). This is a great playground for a true puzzle solver!
Your main responsibilities will be:
Manage the data team, provide guidance and mentorship, and foster team culture.
Evaluate and improve our existing data strategy and infrastructure to help unlock more data driven decisions across the company.
Take charge of maintaining our data tech stack, which consists of Keboola on top of Snowflake ❄️ (we manage it by ourselves), and multiple reporting tools (Tableau, GoodData, Redash, Google Analytics for web traffic, Mixpanel for user events, and HighTouch for reverse-ETL, HubSpot for CRM).
Lead a high-performing data team, manage performance, and develop career paths and growth opportunities for team members. This also includes recruiting and hiring new colleagues.
Maintain and improve our data pipelines, and identify new data sources that could be used to enrich current datasets.
Help other teams in the company make data-informed decisions by providing trusted insights and reports across product, finance, or marketing.
Proactively identify gaps and errors in data and reporting, and work towards improving those areas.
Provide analytical insights on teams’ and product performance to identify root causes and influence the direction of strategy and priorities.
Provide ongoing support to stakeholders to ensure the efficient adoption of reports.
What you can expect to accomplish
After 1 month: You get to know the data team, the work it does, and what the individual members specialize in. You meet with other teams and stakeholders you may work with. This will provide you overview of the company, business, and the scope of our team’s work. You go through our data architecture and projects in Keboola, you understand what data we work with and what added value we provide to our product and business teams. By the end of the month, you understand the high-level data architecture and can answer simple data questions about the company.
After 3 months: You evaluate the current data strategy and infrastructure, and come up with possible improvements; this could be specific data products or new practices. You dive deeper into one domain of the business (product, finance, marketing, …), discuss needs with the teams and work on designing and creating solution to them. That could be creating new pipelines in Keboola, updating current ones, creating reports in visualization tools, or preparing data automatization. By the end of the 3 months, you have an overview of the whole data architecture and more extensive knowledge of a specific business domain. You’re able to discuss that domain in-depth and create reports for that domain.
After 6 months: You add more domains to your knowledge base. You’re in contact with the senior team to provide insights for strategy discussions and support decision-making. You understand how the company and analytics/BI work and are ready to help Apify reach new heights. You drive higher adoption of data-informed decisions across the company. You design career paths and growth opportunities for team members.
Who we’re looking for
An experienced data analyst interested in data engineering and technical setups of data pipelines; or a data engineer who wants to work closer with business. Demonstrated leadership skills with experience in team management are highly desirable.
Advanced knowledge of SQL and Keboola (or willingness to learn it fast).
Experience with data architecture design, including data storage, ETL processes, and data pipelines.
Experience with reporting tools (ideally Tableau or GoodData).
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Excellent communication skills (in English) and empathy.
Someone who can break down complex data analysis into concise and simple communications, navigate the business context, and influence decision-making for business leaders.
