Plans, supervises and coordinates unit activities and programs forfacility units, or for offenders in a field setting. Interviews familymembers, school officials, law enforcement agencies, vocationalcounselors, medical practitioners, special treatment program staff,victims, and others regarding assigned cases. Assesses offender'spotential for improvement, stability or continued deterioration.Individually or as part of a treatment team, formulates case plans tohelp individual and family functions; and to develop living skills,educational, and vocational goals as appropriate. Evaluates individualprogress and unit functioning. May coordinate and direct living unitactivities consistent with established goals. May initiate emergencyprocedures to remove an offender from his current living situation andarrange appropriate placement consistent with good security andtreatment practices. Develops recommendations for changes in individualor unit status. Provides counseling and supportive services tooffenders, their families and others. Addresses institutional andcommunity needs of offenders through case management in a facility or ina field office. Administers instruments and makes recommendations forthe custody classification or pre-sentence and pre-parole investigationsof offenders. Evaluates unit team staff as appropriate. Developsappropriate incentives for offenders. May investigate offendergrievances. Helps implement programs for convicted and pre-releaseinmates, to include supervising work release and furloughs. Counsels andprovides social casework services as necessary and as directed by thecourts. Maintains records and prepares reports as directed. May helpdetermine restitution to injured parties. May collect and account forfines and restitution under court order. May arrest and return to courtcustody violators on warrants issued by appropriate authority.Recommends court or parole board action on cases. Acts as a liaison forthe Department with Community Boards and monitors compliance withreparative agreements developed by a Reparative Board. Performs relatedwork as required.

Class Definition
Specialized professional casework, counseling, unit program direction,restorative justice services, and group facilitation work for theDepartment of Corrections providing services to offenders, victims, andcommunity members in a correctional facility, field office, or communitysetting. Duties include designing, administering, and monitoringservices for a client's (or facility unit's) immediate and long rangeneeds including some specialized living situations and treatment. Dutiesalso include addressing the needs of victims and the community throughrestorative case planning.\Incumbents form working relationships with clients, act as role models,and work with other staff, community service providers, and communityboards as appropriate; and may act as living unit coordinators within afacility. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate workers,paraprofessionals or trainees on a regular, temporary, or case basis inaccordance with workload, unit responsibility, or institutional staffingneeds. Liaison with other correctional units and human service agencies,both public and private, may be required. Duties are performed underdirection of a program superior or director.

Environmental Factors
Duties are performed in a correctional facility or field office.Significant interaction wit potentially dangerous correctional clientsis involved. Evening, weekend, and alternating shift duty may berequired to provide necessary services or emergency coverage. Some fieldtravel may be necessary, for which private means of transportation isrequired. Work related court appearances may be anticipated.
Minimum Qualifications: Two years or more as a CSS I.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and experience in thedelivery of casework, planning, and evaluation of offenders in acorrectional setting.
Special Requirements: Candidates must pass any level of backgroundinvestigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and or national criminal record checks,as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriateto the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, withthe exception of those who are current classified state employeesseeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified positionor are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
