  Job Description

  WHO WE ARE

At the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) our work is about protecting Michigan’s environment and that work spans research, monitoring, regulation, education, and community engagement. We are equally passionate about creating a positive, professional, and supportive work environment where we value our differences and are committed to being open and respectful of all our employees and the public we serve.

We offer internships for students interested in learning more about environmental positions at the state level while gaining meaningful professional experiences. The intern will work directly with staff and executives on key environmental issues in a variety of capacities throughout the department.

  WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE:

  The chosen intern will:

Conduct and summarize a literature review on the topic(s) of copper usage in aquatic systems to control nuisance macroalgae, filamentous algae and invasive species

Research copper accumulation and availability in sediment in lakes with copper treatment.

Conduct and summarize a literature review on the drivers of algae blooms, why waterbodies flip from macrophyte to algae dominated systems, relationship between herbicide treatments and occurrence/frequency of algae blooms, do filamentous algae blooms compete with macrophytes, and habitat quality of filamentous algae.

Create reports summarizing results including references and electronic copies of literature articles found/used.

Learn how research is a critical piece to the work EGLE performs daily.

This internship will be fully remote; however student will be required to pick up State issued laptop and receive technology access instruction in person at a physical EGLE District Office Location.

Interns are expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week and can work up to 40 hours per week. Days and times of work will be coordinated around the student’s academic schedule and the needs of the project outcomes
