Responsibilities Responsibilities include: Weld components inflat, vertical, or overhead positions. Clamp, hold, tack-weld,heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain requiredconfigurations and positions for welding. Detect faulty operation ofequipment or defective materials and notify supervisors. Operate manualor semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, usingprocesses such as gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, andshielded metal arc. Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processesto avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, orexpansion of material. Examine workpieces for defects and measureworkpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance withspecifications. Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power toolscommon to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metalarc welding equipment. Chip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter,using hand scrapers or power chippers, portable grinders, or arc-cuttingequipment. Analyze engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications,sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout,assembly, and welding operations. Connect and turn regulator valves toactivate and adjust gas flow and pressure so that desired flames areobtained. Determine required equipment and welding methods, applyingknowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques. Mark or tagmaterial with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifyingmarks as required. Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuringthat there is no loose or thick...
