The Control Operator is a career level technician with knowledge of and experience with power plant operations and applicable regulations. These operations include the safe and efficient operational control of boilers, turbines, generators and electrical equipment. The position assures that unit operations are maintained and system load requirements are met. Monitors and operates power plant equipment in accordance with established procedures. Recognizes and responds to system anomalies to maintain stable and secure system operation. The position requires the ability to take direction from management and also to be able to take independent action when necessary that supports the availability, capability and reliability of the station units.

Monitors and operates the power plant in an environmentally responsible and safe manner consistent with plant, division, corporate and governmental objectives.
Monitors and operates the power plant in a manner to reliably meet Energy Operations and transmission control needs. Protect and preserves unit assets without negatively impacting the unit’s equivalent availability targets due to operating errors.
Assist in the performance of maintenance activities by providing direction and operating knowledge that assist in the investigation and repair of equipment problems. Ensure unit reliability is not negatively impacted when taking equipment in or out of service for maintenance. Investigates and reports equipment problems accurately and promptly to maximize the reliability and efficiency of units.
Demonstrates a working knowledge of unit process controls and standard operating procedures associated with control room operation as it relates to the unit processes and equipment assets, including the protection of these assets.
Assist in the coordination of maintenance efforts of the electric generating unit equipment, environmental and water treatment systems.
Provide communication to their supervisor to provide updates on operations and maintenance of the plant, and identify risks in delivery or resourcing needs.
Utilizes technical knowledge of plant operations to determine correct actions. Anticipating likely results and consequences of alternative solutions.
Requires technical competence of the control systems that are used to operate and control unit equipment and processes including those systems in the main control room.
Qualifications
Required Education, Skills & Experience
High school or equivalent. 1-3 years’ experience in an operating plant as a Control Room Operator, Assistant Control Room Operator or equivalent in a steam plant. Have a working knowledge of combustion turbines, generators and associated equipment in a fossil fuel power plant environment.
Have a demonstrated ability in the operation of power plant equipment under normal and emergency conditions.
Must have demonstrated an aptitude for leadership, have a thorough understanding of the principle of operation of a drum boiler with an integrated turbine-generator electronic controls.
Must often take independent action within job scope, and it is important that the employee is capable of working without direct and constant supervision. The level of interpersonal interaction is high.
Incumbent must be effective in oral communication and must be articulate enough to provide sometimes complex technical explanations.
Ability to read, must allow for comprehension of complex technical material.
Repetitive tasks seldom occur; therefore, the use of logic in problem solving is normal and in emergency situations is extremely important. Time deadlines are often encountered.
Accuracy of short and long term memory in order to receive multiple tasks at one time and to carry them out in proper order is important, along with the ability to coordinate the work activities of others. The ability to give or to receive and follow a series of oral instructions are all very important in safe and orderly accomplishment of job functions.
Have a working knowledge of the data system and be able to utilize its various functions.
Have a thorough working knowledge of the plant layout, the functions and operation of equipment located therein, and the functional relationship with system operations.
Must be able to make clear, concise and accurate reports.
Must be able to train and direct others and receive and issue orders in a manner that will maintain harmony and safety and obtain satisfactory working results from employees assigned to work with this position.
Have demonstrated computer skills to facilitate use of Computerized Maintenance Management System, Microsoft Office suite, OSI PI data system, etc.

Cleco Power is a regulated electric public utility that owns 10 generating units with a rated capacity of 3,360 megawatts, 1,335 miles of transmission lines and 12,152 miles of distribution lines. Cleco Power uses multiple generating sources and multiple fuels to serve approximately 290,000 customers in 24 of Louisiana's parishes through its retail business and supplies wholesale power in Louisiana and Mississippi.
