Definition
Under general direction, is responsible for coordinating programs designed to develop and maintain close positive relations between neighborhood communities and the City of Columbus; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work
• Interacts with City officials, community leaders and members of the general public to provide information and technical assistance in the resolution of neighborhood concerns/problems;
• Attends other City Department community outreach events;
• Makes oral presentations before community and civic organizations designed to educate citizens about cultural diversity and to reduce insensitivity among diverse groups;
• Oversees and manages the Treehouse Community Outreach Vehicle Program;
• Prepares and distributes reports, newsletters, and various informational documents; posts information and oversees content on website and various social media channels;
• Oversees and manages the Department’s Community Outreach Program;
• Manages, inventories, and orders Columbus Recreation and Parks Department’s community outreach promotional items;
• Evaluates program effectiveness; compiles and maintains information files on City and community activities;
• Coordinates the usage of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department’s branded community outreach materials as needed;
• Confers with department and other City officials in the planning and development of community relations activities;
• Notifies Columbus Recreation and Parks internal section heads on issues brought forward by community leaders and members of the general public;
• Provides explanation of ordinances, rules, and regulations of City, state, or federal government programs and services;
• Develops or updates operating manuals and/or policies establishing methods of performing work in accordance with organizational goals and objectives;
• Participates in the budget development process for the community relations program;
• Responds to inquiries for information from other City officials, community leaders, and the general public;
• Coordinates City services in neighborhood communities such as weed/high grass removal contracts, neighborhood pride events, etc.
• May supervise the activities of employees responsible for maintaining positive relations between neighborhood communities; may train and assist program staff.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience in public or community relations. Substitution(s): Additional years of experience, as stated above, may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year for year basis.A master's degree in one (1) of the above fields may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
