UW-IT is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing technology solutions to all three campuses, UW medical centers and global research operations. UW-IT collaborates with University partners to advance teaching, learning, innovation, and discovery at the UW. The Communications & Engagement unit within UW-IT is the operational arm of UW-IT’s strategic outreach, listening, collaboration and connection with its customers, partners and stakeholders. It focuses on building and nurturing strategic relationships and fortifying UW-IT’s identity as a trusted and innovative partner, in partnership with the Strategy unit. This unit spearheads relationship management activities, engagement strategies, reputation management, brand strategy management, service adoption enablement, and marketing functions. Through adept storytelling and strategic messaging, the unit ensures that UW-IT’s narrative resonates powerfully with its diverse audience, and content reaches stakeholders and customers at the right time. This unit prioritizes proactive and strategic convening with partners and stakeholders to gain insights that inform the strategic technology roadmap.
The Communications Specialist plays a key role in developing marketing and communications strategies to help ensure UW students, faculty and staff are successful in using information and the technology services portfolio provided by UW Information Technology.
The candidate must possess strong people skills, including the ability to build trust and relationships with team members, subject matter experts, stakeholders and partners.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, Journalism, English, or related field or experience.
Minimum 5 years’ experience with writing and editing digital content, include web, email, and social media
Excellent writing and editing skills; ability to translate complex processes into layperson-friendly language
Demonstrated ability to develop effective communication strategies and plans
Experience communicating effectively with diverse stakeholders, including customers, technical audiences, business process owners and executive leadership, each at an appropriate level of detail.
Development and delivery of clear communications using a variety of methods – written documentation, website content, social media, email, graphics.
Experience using a variety of tools to support effective communications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, CanvaS, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign).
Technical aptitude and appetite for learning and becoming proficient in new systems.
Ability to work across multiple teams, units.
Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision in a virtual environment.
Demonstrated commitment to serving diverse populations/communities representing a range of social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial, and/or ethnic backgrounds.
Demonstrated excellent communication skills, technical documentation skills, communication skills, and personal interaction abilities. DESIRED:
Experience working in higher education or large complex organization.
Excellent presentation, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills including communicating effectively with stakeholders and leadership about priorities and deliverables.
Demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
Attention to detail, ability to consistently meet deadlines and strong customer service orientation.
Ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a dynamic work environment.
Experience using email marketing automation applications, such as Marketo.
Experience using Microsoft Forms for survey creation.
Experience using WordPress or another content management system.
Experience with ITIL and IT service management.
Experience in search engine optimization (SEO) best practices.
Knowledge of accessibility best practices. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT The general working hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but this individual must be willing to adjust and extend hours to accommodate deadlines.Hybrid, open office environment.
