  Job Summary

  The Coder IV is a key member of the Coding Team and has shared accountabilityfor the success of the department.The Coder IV reviews medical record documentation to abstract and assigndiagnoses, procedures, and modifiers for statistical classification andreimbursement purposes. This includes, but is not limited to, variouscoding assignments under the direction of Coding Management. Provides feedbackregarding documentation and coding issues. Utilizes software applications andcoding references, including electronic, to perform coding related tasks.The Coder IV maintains an understanding of and ensures compliance with, allapplicable Official Coding Guidelines. This position advanced experience andjudgment to plan and accomplish goals.FacilityThe Level IV inpatient coder's primary task is to code inpatient accounts.Proficiency in ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding and PCS, including DRG codingrequired. Experience with writing physician queries required.ProfessionalThe Level IV coder's primary task is coding complex inpatient,observation, surgical and procedural based areas. Proficiency in ICD-10-CMdiagnosis coding and CPT procedure coding required.

  Essential Functions:

  Meets or exceeds the minimum coding productivity standard for the type orcoding performed. Submits a fully completed and accurate production logweekly in a timely manner. Meets or exceed the minimum coding accuracy rateof 95%. Meets or exceeds the minimum timeliness standard. (85%)Participates in coder and provider education including documentationimprovement efforts for providers. Interacts with provider, nursing staffand departments as assigned. Assist in the training and quality assurance ofall coding levels. Completes any required coding training or other assignedcoding instruction. Participates in departmental coding and educationalmeetings and roundtables. Maintains current coding credential. (10%)Follows all departmental and DHHA procedures. Follows directions given bycoding Management. Manages resources in a conservative, responsible andcost-effective manner. Ensures confidentiality of patient information bycreating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharinginformation learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance ofthe job responsibilities. Works as a member of a coding team for thesuccessful benefit of the department and DHHA. Strives for strong unitcohesion by working well with other members of the team and performing tasksin a manner that maintains the unit cohesion. (5%)Education:

  Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program RequiredWork Experience:

  Five years medical coding with multi-specialty experience or specialtycertification Required andTwo years' experience in an academic setting Required andProficiency in all major specialties Required andStrong procedural coding Required andExperience reviewing DRG assignment required RequiredLicenses:

  CCS-Certified Coding Specialist - AAPC - American Academy of Procedural CodersRequiredKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  Applies advanced knowledge of coding and compliance with a working knowledgeof hospital based, teaching physician guidelines.Knowledge of encoder and data abstraction software.Strong knowledge of billing and reimbursement.Possess good oral and written communication skills.Possess strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently andmeet deadlines.Able to think critically.Must be capable of reading and interpreting coding guidelines and makingsubsequent c ding decisions.Knowledgeable in researching coding related topics and issues.Strong oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to giveprofessional presentations.Ability to handle a fast paced environment and be a positive role model.Must pass a coding proficiency pre-hire test with 85% accuracy or higher.Good computer keyboarding skillsKnowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.Epic experience helpful.Encoder experience helpful.
