  The College of Letters and Sciences CLS Seminar Program is now accepting applications from those with demonstrated and effective teaching experience, to serve as teaching faculty in our CLS courses. Successful candidates will enjoy facilitating discussion on a variety of texts and topics and can exemplify expert learning in an exciting, multi-disciplinary seminar.

  Position Details

  General Statement

  Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding.

  Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

  The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.

  Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

  Duties and Responsibilities

  We hope to attract applicants who can teach in a diverse University community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed.

  This includes, but is not limited to:

  Leading a seminar course of approximately 15-18 students.

  Attending CLS faculty meetings once per week, usually on Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays around noon, to discuss the texts and teaching pedagogy and classroom concerns as they arise.

  Working with student mentors and their corresponding program when applicable, such as with the Sophomore Surge mentoring program, or having a CLS peer mentor regularly attending and helping co-facilitate class. This may include some supervisory duties, regularly meeting outside of class, allowing mentors time to make brief announcements within the class, and the assigning of a grade, depending on the role of this mentor.

  Holding regular and as needed office hours.

  Occasionally meeting with students outside of the normally scheduled class.

  Participating in program and university assessment. This may include submitting requested assignments to be assessed and may also include setting time aside to assess assignments.

  Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  Minimum of a Master’s Degree in the appropriate field with academic background commensurate with teaching one or more of the specialty areas listed above.

  Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues within and outside a program.

  Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  Academic/professional experience.

  Demonstrated experience teaching interdisciplinary courses.

  Demonstrated commitment to student, faculty, and staff diversity.

  The Successful Candidate Will

  Have excellent written and oral communication skills.

  Have the ability to relate to, mentor, and inspire students and to develop classroom rapport with a diverse student body.

  Have effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty, mentors, and staff.

  Be committed to quality teaching and skilled in utilizing engaging pedagogy that involves students in the learning process.

  Take initiative and work well both independently and in a group setting.

  Dedication to supporting and enhancing Montana State University’s initiative for diversity, equity and inclusiveness.

  Maintain confidentiality of records and information.

  Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

  The position for which you have applied MAY BE a Union position. Union affiliation is determined by job duties and the collective bargaining unit.

  Non-Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University ( AFMSU ). Faculty covered by AFMSU may choose to pay membership dues. This is a condition of employment. Additional information can be found at AFMSU or by emailing AFSMU .

  Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.

  If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status of this position could be impacted.

  Exceptions: Anyone having successfully completed a PEI exam or any faculty working in Extension are exempt from the Union

  The Program

  This program is different from nearly any other course students are likely to take at MSU . It incorporates small class sizes, approaches the subject matter from multi-disciplinary perspectives, and it gives students an opportunity to work closely with a faculty member, mentor if applicable, and other students. The course is designed to engage students in university life and college-level learning through reading, thinking, and engaged dialogue.
