Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Technician I is a valuable member of our team who provides clinical services to our patient population and also interacts in a professional manner with nursing staff, physicians, support staff, peers and other members of the hospital community. The TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Technician I serves as the Lead Tech in all areas of Histology.
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Responsible for performing a variety of tissue staining procedures required for pathology diagnosis with emphasis on Immunohistochemistry supervision. Maintain working knowledge of all tests/procedures within histology. SL4 will serve as a technical consultant and be expected to answer questions, solve problems, and perform all necessary testing in histology.Apply detailed specialized knowledge of immunohistochemistry. Apply scientific principles and their applications to perform advanced level testing in histology.Stain, coverslip, label and case assemble, and distribute all prepared histologic sections.Follow all appropriate protocols for all LIS systems: Copath, Ventana Benchmark, Ultra, HE600, and Vantage.Is responsible for troubleshooting, maintenance schedule logs, emergency repair, and instruction to technical staff on operational procedures.Will complete all routine and special requests for additional levels, recuts, special stain and immunohistochemistry requests; verifying each upon completion in CoPath and documenting the above for QA purposes.Provide all stock and inventory for all sections histology and gross room.As assigned, routinely provide coverage for grossing biopsy specimens under supervision of pathologist.Conduct specialized training of complex laboratory instrumentation covering theory of function, mechanics of operation and primary/secondary operational maintenance. Supervise the battery of special stains and immunohistochemistry used in diagnostic histopathology.Validate and perform correlations of multiple new cancer staining ihc testing protocols. Provide new validations according to CAP and NYSDOH guidelines, maintain the department Quality Assurance reports and monthly preventative maintenance.Routinely provides direct supervision to subordinate staff and students. Prepares performance programs, performance appraisals and competency assessments of subordinate staff. Monitors and directs daily workflow and makes adjustments in work assignments as necessary. Follow all laboratory procedures and protocols with interpretation of such policies as necessary to ensure proper patient care and safe work practices which include using appropriate engineering and administrative controls and/or wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment. Assist the SL5 Associate Tech. Direct the CAP and NYS DOH inspection preparedness.Must understand all applicable JCAHO, CAP, and NYSDOH regulations and University Hospital policies and procedures. Will be required to assist in the preparation for on-site examination by inspectors. Accepts responsibility for the labs sections compliance with all standards and regulations. May be required to perform other related duties as assigned or directed. Provide all stock and inventory for all sections of histology and gross room.As assigned, routinely provide coverage for grossing biopsy specimens under supervision of pathologist.
Qualifications
Required (as evidenced by an attached resume): BS degree in Biology, Medical Technology or other life science. A minimum of six years histology experience, including 2 years Lab Supervisor experience. Supervisory experience in Clinical Laboratory, experience in IHC and all phases of Histology and gross room procedures. NYS License with certification as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Technician, or Certified Histological Technician.
Preferred: A minimum of seven years histology experience, with supervisory experience in immunohistochemistry, all phases of histology and gross room experience to include accessioning and grossing of biopsies.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $97,296 - $168,239.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
In addition, all UUP positions have an additional $3,087
