  Summary

  The primary purpose of the Coding Supervisor position is to provide supervision and departmental support for the daily operations of the Revenue Operations & Coding department. The Coding Supervisor will focus on enhancing revenue opportunities and establishing departmental goals. This position will be responsible for mentoring employees to accomplish their goals. The Coding Supervisor will anticipate & resolve potential problem areas, as well as report them to the Coding Manager. This position will review work activities and look for trends in areas that may require additional education or re-training for staff.

  Key Functions

  · Coordinate and implement work processes for assigned staff that are engaged in complex and diversified duties.

  · Offer support & resources to enable staff to perform job assignments with a high degree of accuracy.

  · Implement quality control measures to ensure efficiency and accuracy levels are met.

  · Initiate & conduct administrative meetings to enhance operations.

  · Promote institutional awareness of appropriate coding practices.

  · Review, monitor and approve employee requests for time off.

  · Review, monitor and approve employees work schedules via Timekeeping System

  · Monitor individual production performance and set appropriate production standards.

  · Monitor attendance, and timekeeping reports to ensure department guidelines are followed.

  · Provide timely input and feedback for employee evaluations.

  · Communicate all problem areas and personnel issues to the manager in a timely manner.

  · Provide timely updates to the manager for ongoing work issues, as well as any proposed changes in the current work processes.

  · Develop and propose methods to enhance production or efficiency.

  · Document employee problem issues/discussions and report to manager.

  Coding Regulations and Policies :

  · Analyze and implement coding practices which maximize reimbursement for services rendered, while following appropriate coding and auditing regulations.

  · Responsible for ensuring the staff utilizes the ICD-10 and CPT-4 classification systems to assign appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes.

  · Monitor coding and auditing outcome to ensure production quotas are being met.

  · Review production quotas on a regular basis to determine if production formulas need to be revised. Perform regular random reviews to monitor quality of work processes.

  · Ensure back up measures are in place to address backlogs. May be required to assist in working backlogs to maintain a current operational process.

  · Ensure backlogs are reported to the manager.

  · Monitor employee trends and mentor those who may need additional assistance.

  Governmental Compliance Regulations:

  · Ensure that staff is following the most current documentation guidelines according to institutional guidelines, as established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as well as Texas Medicare Part B.

  · Review coding and documentation to ensure coding compliance guidelines are being met, and report discrepancies to the coder/auditor.

  · Communicate ongoing work issues on a consistent basis to the manager of Professional Coding & Education.

  Required Education:

  Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related healthcare field.

  Preferred Education:

  Master's in Health Information Management.

  Required Experience:

  Five years of coding in physician and/or academic healthcare organization to include three years of lead/supervisory experience. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.

  Preferred Experience:

  Five years of experience in training and auditing, knowledge/experience with Vizient, strong collaboration, strong communication skills (written and verbal), self-starter, coachability.

  License/Certification

  One or more of the following:

  Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Certified Coding Associate (CCA) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Certified Professional Coder - Associate (CPC-A) by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).

  Other Requirements:

  Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
