I. Purpose of JobUnder general supervision designs, implements, and oversees instructional and educational programs for children and families in the Maury County Public Library System. Activities include developing and implementing a variety of educational programs for children, teens and families, conducting/overseeing daily story reading sessions, assisting with the procurement of programmatic materials, and assisting with outreach activities. Also assists with overseeing the daily activities of the childrens section of the main library, researches grants and assists with obtaining grant funding, assists with public relations activities, and maintains and updates the library website.

II. Essential Job Duties

A. Childrens Section and Programs

-Provides direction to all staff and volunteers participating in child educational and instructional programs for the Maury County library system.-Develops and implements innovative programs for children, teens, and families.-Conducts daily story time sessions and coordinates early childhood reading initiatives and other special learning/instructional activities.-Manages large library-wide initiatives like Summer Reading or other multi-partner programs.B. Collection and Inventory Management-Recommends the ordering of books, periodicals, reference materials, and other supplies for childrens activities and curriculum.-Ensures the maintenance of an accurate inventory of all library books, audio books, CDs, equipment and supplies for the childrens section of the main library.-Evaluates collection; identifies materials that need to be replaced, added, or weeded.-Ensures computer hardware components and software applications are up to date.C. Social Media, Promotion, and Public Outreach-Oversees and assists with planning outreach activities to enhance the awareness of library programs and resources.-Makes presentations to schools, civic clubs, church groups, etc. to inform them of library operations and services pertaining to the education of children and their families.-Creates a variety of publicity materials including flyers, newsletters, promotional materials, etc. to promote the activities of the public library.-Assists with maintaining the public library website.-Uses social networking tools to promote library events.-Prepares library displays, bibliographies, and reading lists to market the collection.-Creates a variety of publicity materials including flyers, newsletters, promotional materials, etc. to promote the activities of the library.D. Patron Services and Assistance-Interacts with library patrons and addresses any issues and/or concerns related to childrens activities.-Assists with teaching computer classes.-Educates library patrons, individually and in groups, in the use of electronic resources including the librarys webpage, catalog, research databases, and online downloadable resources.-Provides answers to reference and readers advisory questions in person, over the phone, and through electronic forums.-Provides direct public service at service points.E. Administrative Activities-As directed, prepares and submits grant applications to public and private entities to support and enhance library operations and services.-Compiles data and prepares reports for the Library Board, regional and state library officials and County Commission regarding circulation, attendance for various activities, budgetary issues, etc.-Assists in the implementation of strategic planning initiatives.-Recruits volunteers to assist with special events, assist with library operations, etc.-Responsible for compliance with all pertinent federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances as well as all library policies and procedures.F. Miscellaneous-Attends conferences, workshops, seminars, etc. to remain current on issues affective public library operations.-Serves as librarian in charge during shifts as needed.

IV. Primary Job ChallengesOne of the primary challenges of the Children's Librarian role is effectively designing and implementing a diverse range of educational programs for children, teens, and families, while ensuring engagement and accessibility for the community.

V. Equipment OperatedGeneral office equipment including computers, copiers, printers, fax machines, and multiline telephone.

VI. Key Competencies Required-Job Content Knowledge:Thorough knowledge of library science including the appropriate cataloging and storing of books, periodicals, reference materials, etc.; TCA laws and regulations governing library operations including copyright and privacy laws; knowledge of automated library systems and resources; the Library Board Policies and Procedures manual.-Language Skills:Level 3: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the general public.-Mathematical Skills:Level 2: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.-Reasoning Ability:Level 3: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out multi-step instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems by choosing from several known choices with frequent reliance on how problems were dealt with before.-Teamwork: Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Encourages others to express their ideas and opinions. Provides input into identifying and solving problems. Anticipates need of others for information about job tasks and work environment and provides it to them in a timely manner. Willingly assists others with job tasks when appropriate.

VII. Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentPhysical Demands: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires the incumbent to:-Frequently stand or walk.-Frequently sit.-Regularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel.-Frequently reach with hands and arm.-Frequently stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.-May be required to climb or balance.-Regularly talk or hear.-Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.Work Environment:The work environment is indoors with occasional outdoor planned program activity and typically moderately quiet.

VIII. QualificationsEducation and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a Masters Degree in Library/Information Science (MLS or MSIS) plus three (3) years of related experience working with children for a public or school library, or an equivalent combination of education and experienc
