About Chief Operations Officer, NTAP

  The Department of Neurology is seeking a Chief Operations Officer, NTAP for the Neurofibromatosis Therapeutic Acceleration Program (NTAP) at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. NTAP is an innovative, fully funded research organization driven to develop effective therapies for the two most common tumors in Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a disease which impacts 150,000 children and adults in America and millions worldwide. A world-leader in setting the scientific direction for NF1 research, the advances made by NTAP directly help people with NF1 as well as contribute significantly to understanding more common cancers related to NF1. NTAP partners with academic, government, and industry leaders across the globe, working with the best-and-brightest in making a difference and helping people with NF1 to live healthy and full lives through research and discovery.

  The Chief of Operations (COO), NTAP is a newly created position to meet the exciting growth opportunities for NTAP and NF1 research and therapeutics. The COO, NTAP will play a critical role in partnering with the Executive Director/CEO to ensure NTAP continues its success and builds upon it through new initiatives. Keeping the mission in the center of all of the organization’s work, the COO, NTAP will translate NTAP’s vision and strategy into operational tactics, fortify the organizations infrastructure, oversee programs and teams, and grow partnerships and scientific programs. The COO, NTAP must also promote a positive work environment, ensure alignment between staff, mission, and outside partners, and guarantee that internal and external work is performed at the highest levels of excellence to achieve NTAP’s mission.

  The COO, NTAP must be a creative problem solver and someone who emphasizes organizational priorities, clarifies strategies, builds partnerships and implements systems that support the team, the work, objectives and mission. The ideal candidate will have strong skills in multi-disciplinary leadership, operations management, possess a track record of successfully scaling research programs, and be dedicated to fostering a culture of teamwork, innovation and measurable success.

  The COO, NTAP will ensure that all NTAP initiatives are integrated and operate with optimal efficiency, consistency and compliance. The COO, NTAP will report to the Executive Director/CEO and serve on NTAP leadership committees to develop, manage and adapt NTAP's strategic priorities. They will be responsible for creating and managing standard operating procedures, overseeing day-to-day operations including resource allocation, talent management, and responding to acute events and championing opportunities to optimize efficiency and growth. The person in this position will play a vital role in ensuring the efficient operation and growth of NTAP's scientific initiatives, directly contributing to the ultimate goal of finding multiple successful therapies for NF1.

  Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  Leadership and Management

  Partner with the NTAP Executive Director/CEO in directing the core activities of NTAP

  Manage day-to-day operations, including resource allocation, talent management, and addressing acute events and opportunities for growth

  Lead the process for hiring new staff, annual staff performance reviews, and work with the team to implement all personal procedures for NTAP and the NF center

  Manage adherence and compliance to standards and directives, including compliance with NTAP’s policies, external partner regulations and agreements, and JHU

  Oversee NTAP’s relationship with outside vendors and with relevant departments within JHU (including legal, accounting, IT, etc.)

  Lead special projects and initiatives with skillful oversight and support to achieve goals within defined timelines

  Support NTAP's expansion into new scientific areas via assisting in establishing and managing collaborative partnerships.

  Strategy and Planning

  Collaborate with NTAP Executive Director/CEO to set annual and long-term goals for programmatic work and monitor progress to goals

  Ensure that all NTAP initiatives are integrated and operate efficiently, consistently, and in compliance with regulatory standards

  Exercise thought leadership on the successful execution of NTAP marketing, business development plans, as well as monitoring and evaluation

  Participate with senior management team to assure quality management and effective strategic planning

  Manage implementation of an annual communications calendar, coherent with programmatic goals;

  Supervise the writing of external materials and ensure the consistency of messaging and brand positioning in collaboration with a Communications Director/communications team.

  Infrastructure, Finance and Operations

  Work with the Senior Program Officer to supervise grants management activities of NTAP

  Assist CFO and NTAP Executive Director/CEO with developing budgets and ensuring program compliance with budgets

  Manage the organization and coordination of meetings, symposium, conferences, events, and travel

  Assist in reviewing and implementing JHU and departmental policies as they pertain to the operational functions

  Prepare and collect agenda, documents, and all materials for meetings

  Interact with staff at all organizational levels (from NTAP, JHU, and beyond) to gather information and/or provide requested information.

  Ability to work collaboratively with other senior managers, JHU leadership and leadership from the public, not-for-profit and private sector.

  Minimum Qualifications

  Bachelor’s Degree in in Business Administration, Public Health Administration, a scientific discipline, or related discipline.

  Seven years progressively increasing responsibility/leadership in nonprofit, scientific program, medical industry or academic development including experience leading and delivering projects to time, quality and cost.

  Experience with systems implementation and demonstrated ability to manage high performing teams via effective team operations.

  Additional education may be substituted for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  Preferred Qualifications

  Advanced Degree such as PhD, MBA, MD.

  Experience with and enthusiasm for medical products business development and commercialization.

  Experience succeeding within an academic environment (including experience with the office of research affairs and technology transfer offices).

  Demonstrated experience and understanding of grant and funding mechanisms, including compliance and reporting.

  Familiarity with scientific and medical terminology.

  Starting Salary Range: Min $97,200 - Max $170,200 Annually ($133,700 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

  JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
