Job Responsibilities/Duties
Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) is the tank farm operating contractor at the Hanford Site located in Richland, WA. The WRPS mission is to safely store, retrieve, and treat 56 million gallons of legacy radioactive and hazardous waste. This complex mission spans all competencies of engineering/science accomplished through a highly integrated organization engineering organization which supports all areas of the tank farm mission including Retrievals, Production Operations, Field Projects, Waste Feed Delivery Projects, and long term innovations.
This position supports the Effluent Treatment Facility (ETF), which is a less than Hazard Category 3 facility that treats and disposes liquid effluents from Hanford programs and projects. The ETF removes low levels of radioactive and chemical contaminants from wastewater streams. ETF is currently installing new unit operations.
This Chemical Engineer position will function as a facility expert in sampling, facility environmental permits, collection of operational data for environmental reporting, and facility waste acceptance. Responsibilities of the Chemical Engineer include, but are not limited to the following:
Review of permit renewals to ensure compliance of the current operations.
Support regulatory inspections, as requested.
Ensure environmental data is collected and analyzed to demonstrate compliance with permit and nuclear safety requirements.
Collect data, potentially from multiple sources, and analyzes that data required for periodic or special reports such as quarterly discharge monitoring reports, annual waste volumes, air emissions, chemical tracking, etc.
Schedule and track environmental samples to support ongoing operations.
Support report development and submittal and provide technical editing for letters, documents, reports, notifications, and technical presentations.
Participate in procedure development and revisions.
Prepare sampling and analysis plans and sampling paperwork for environmental samples.
Integrate with analytical laboratories regarding sample breakdown and analysis.
Review of analytical data, and comparison of chemical data for waste streams to waste acceptance packages.
Create spreadsheets and supporting documents.
Review and reconcile characterization data.
Responsible for facility waste acceptance, developing campaign plans, post campaign reports and other process related documents.
Provide process performance trending and analysis, evaluate process strategies and improvements, and provide process direction to Operations including preparing process memos.
Shall obtain and maintain at a minimum an Engineering Technical Staff Qualification Card.
Required Qualifications
Grade 17:
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or related discipline; and
Five (5) years related experience
Grade 18:
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or related discipline; and
Seven (7) years related experience
Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.
Grade 19:
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or related discipline; and
Nine (9) years related experience
Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of radioactive and mixed waste practices and requirements, (e.g., Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, etc.).
Ability to review and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
Experience in Environmental compliance.
Strong communication skills. Must be able to communicate with multiple disciplines (Operations, Project Management, Construction, Engineering, etc.), peers, and management.
Background in facility operations.

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
