Job Description:The Phlebotomist I is responsible to accurately collectpatient specimens for diagnostic testing while working in a professionalmedical environment. This position functions as part of a dynamic and engagingteam with a workload that ranges from fast-paced hospital settings andhigh/low volume clinics. Caregivers in this role will gain valuableexperience and knowledge to help prepare them for workplace and careeradvancement.
Scope
1.Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick) accordingto establishedprocedures. Identifies patients using two patient identifiers.Labels specimens and specimen containers accurately.2. Determines the correct priority for STAT, Routine, ASAP, etc.specimen collections. Collects and receives specimens into the laboratoryutilizing computer protocols including processing, preparation,centrifugation, aliquot and routing of specimens, to include referencelab. Ensures the timely transport and processing of all patient specimens fort3. Files patients lab reports, requisitions charges for the business officeand sends reports to outside hospitals and clinics. Posts charges andreconciles invoices. Investigates complex bills, as needed. Researches andresolves any questionable patient orders. Enters patient demographic dataaccurately. Maintains required lab records and logs, collects statistics forreports and other clerical duties as directed by manager.4. Performs complex specimen set-up. Enters complex orders and results. Packsand ships infectious materials. Communicates any special situations related tospecimens or testing with all appropriate staff and management.5. Cleans and maintains equipment, centrifuges, and refrigerators. Recordsdaily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas. Orderssupplies and maintains sufficient inventory to efficiently operate phlebotomyservices. Assists in the training of new associates and students. Acts as areceptionist, greeting patients and answering phones within the laboratory.Performs patient registration and test ordering and specimen processing asappropriate.6. Documents and communicates information thoroughly and accurately. Utilizesequipment according to departmental guidelines, maintaining all equipment asper guidelines. Ensures equipment and supplies are maintained in appropriateworking order. Evaluates and utilizes inventory appropriately, assists withinventory control as needed.7. Maintains a neat and clean work area. Disposes of waste appropriately.Cleans bench areas and equipment. Restocks supplies as appropriate. Maintainsthe washroom and performs washroom functions as appropriate.8. Promotes mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abides byservice behavior standards.9. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
RequiredHigh School Diploma or equivalent is requiredA certification from one of the following required RPT (RegisteredPhlebotomy Technician) AMT PBT (Phlebotomy Technician) ASCP AmericanSociaety of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)Amercian Medical Technologists(AMT) National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) NationalAssociation of Phlebotomy Technicians (NAPT) National HealthcareerAssociation (NHA) Nationa Phlebotomy Association (NPA) AmericanCertification Agency for Healthcare Professionals (ACA) American Societyof Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) National Healthcare Certification Association
Preferred
Six (6) months of laboratory experience is preferred
