  Xcel Energy has an opening for a Cathodic Protection Technician Thereafter and will be located in Pueblo or Denver, Colorado.

  Permanent headquarters will be at the location listed in this job posting, however it is anticipated that the first 6 months of work will be primarily based out of the Denver Headquarters for training. The first 6 months of training will include an evaluation at the end of each month. Once all requirements have been met, promotion to Cathodic Protection Technician Thereafter will occur.

  Position Summary:

  The Cathodic Protection Technician Thereafter is self-directed with independent decision-making responsibilities pertaining to the natural gas CP systems. The responsibility of this position is to preserve the integrity of the natural gas systems by minimizing the deterioration of buried steel pipeline systems through corrosion control engineering practices and in accordance with Federal, State and local rules and regulations. The position also requires the employee to evaluate leakage as well as initiate repair and/or replacement orders. Employee shall perform these responsibilities in a safe and innovative manner to ensure customer needs are met and value is added to the corporation. Within the employee’s area of operation or as assigned: coordinate, inspect and oversee cathodic protection requirements of gas construction and maintenance activities to ensure work requests are performed as designed.

  Due to the strategic importance of pipeline safety with regard to corrosion, the PUC and DOT require that personnel performing corrosion prevention work must have appropriate training (operator qualifications) and experience in the field and/or work under the direction of someone who has these credentials. The company requires that personnel performing cathodic protection work in this capacity be certified as a Cathodic Protection Technician-NACE International CP Level II.

  Major Responsibilities:

  Within the employees’ area of operation, or as assigned, this position is responsible for focusing on preventing corrosion and complying with codes. Also, facilitates the training for the Cathodic Protection Technician as directed by the FJTC.

  Perform cathodic protection surveys (pipe-to-soil reads, rectifier reads, current requirement, etc.) through on-site personal assessment and analysis to formulate solutions that will promptly re-establish cathodic protection on the natural gas distribution and transmission systems maximizing the reliability of the operating systems, public safety and preserving the company’s capital investment.

  Initiate required cathodic protection remedial measures as necessary to preserve delivery assets and forward to appropriate personnel for prompt attention to ensure compliance with D.O.T rules and regulations Part 192 and company standards. Mitigation may include clearing above-ground shorts and installing drive-in anodes when appropriate.

  Recommend cathodic protection mitigation activities & monitor status of orders in assigned area to ensure that work is performed and completed in a timely manner. To achieve corporate goals, employee may make recommendations to managers and coordinators as well as assist designers to direct application of Corrosion Prevention requirements to service providers.

  Evaluate leakage, initiate corrective action to ensure public safety and/or system reliability and determine the most economical method to eliminate leakage. Create and issue repair orders and/or system rehabilitation orders up to 4" in diameter. For systems larger than 4" in diameter, initiate replacement recommendations.

  Provide design requirement information for cathodic protection systems designs, provide mapping updates regarding CP equipment in the GIS software and maintain and update records in computer systems.

  Routinely coordinate own work and prioritizes daily workload of cathodic protection surveys and related activities. Will participate in the corrosion prevention portion of P.U.C. audits in assigned area of operation.

  Knowledge & Skills:

  Must be able to design and diagnostically test AC/DC circuits.

  Must have an understanding of AC/DC electricity.

  Must have a understanding of electronic instrumentation.

  Must have a understanding & ability to make minor repairs and adjustments on electrical measuring instruments.

  Must have ability to use computer, calculator, electric measuring instruments, company vehicles and common hand tools.

  Must have ability to oversee, instruct, train & direct other employees.

  Must have knowledge of past and present construction practices and material selections.

  Must have good oral and written communication skills.

  Must have ability to use ingenuity, imagination, tact, good judgement, mental alertness, initiative, accuracy, analytical ability and mechanical aptitude.

  Must have knowledge of galvanic and impressed current cathodic protection systems.

  Must have ability to evaluate and make recommendations relating to controlling leakage.

  Minimum Requirements:

  High School Diploma or equivalent

  3 years minimum experience in a Cathodic Protection Technician classification or equivalent experience

  Cathodic Protection Technician-NACE International CP Level II

  Proficient in the use of computer data & tracking systems

  Maintain valid Drivers License

  Completion of additional requirements that are identified by a joint training committee.

  Bargaining

  The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $45.78 per hour

  Pay and benefit packages may vary based on position. Some employees are under collective bargaining agreements, which determine the benefits they will receive.
