Counselors focus on a full range of career development initiatives including individual career counseling, workshops and classroom presentations, program management and outreach, resource development, career fairs and special events. Career counselors create innovative content designed to meet the needs of students and alumni at all stages in the career development process. This position collaborates and develops strong relationships with CSE staff and academic departments as well as other units across the University. Career Counselors also assist with the teaching of the College's first year course, CSE 1001 and participate in recruiting and other collegiate events. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Career Counseling, this position is a Professional & Administrative (P&A) position with a minimum and negotiable salary of approximately $55,000. The agreed upon salary will be dependent on experiences and skills related to the position. Additionally, this position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule with three days in-person and two days remote. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 45% Individual Career Counseling Provide individual career counseling to CSE students and alumni on an appointment and drop-in basis, including major and career exploration, job and internship search strategies, resume reviews, practice interviews, job offer negotiations, graduate school preparation, etc. Identify, assess, and understand students' interests, values, skills, and decision-making styles allowing them to develop self-knowledge related to major and career choices. Develop a solid understanding of the related professions represented by CSE majors and maintain familiarity with career opportunities associated with CSE majors. Provide educational and occupational information to aid students' educational and career planning. 30% Program Development and Management Collaborate with Career Services staff to plan, implement, and evaluate the unit's programming and resources. Work directly with employers to organize career events such as workshops and career panels. Collaborate with academic advisors, faculty, staff and other college personnel to identify and meet career services goals and objectives. Serve as a liaison to academic departments within the College. Work closely with other staff members in the planning and coordination of career outreach and programs such as career fairs and employer site visits. Oversee and maintain the career services resource library and web pages including guides and tools. Collaborate with the CSE Marketing and Communications Coordinator to market career services events, services, and resources. Research market and job trends; keep abreast of most current information relevant to preparing science & engineering students for the world of work. 15% Workshop Facilitation/Career Presentations Develop and deliver career development workshops and presentations on job search strategies, resume writing, interview preparation, etc. Collaborate and support student organizations and leadership, including administering workshops and presentations to student groups. 10% Instruction, Professional Development, & Service Teach one section of the College's required first year course, CSE 1001. Attend CSE 1001 training sessions and end of semester retreat, hold weekly office hours and supervise the undergraduate teaching assistant. Engage actively with diversity, equity, and inclusion work, training, certificates, and other opportunities through the Office of Equity and Diversity. Serve on Student Services, College, and University-wide committees as requested or needed. articipate in College recruitment, outreach, orientation and transition programs, student engagement, and commencement events. Participate in local and national professional development associations, events, and programs in the unit, College, University, and/or broader community, including but not limited to Career Development Network, MCUCSA, NACE, etc. Qualifications REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree plus at least four years of relevant experience or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience working in university career services or related setting. Exceptional organization, written, and oral communication skills; strong presentation skills. Commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Knowledge of the unique career-related concerns of college students and employers. An understanding of the career development process with experience in developing and implementing career related programs. Ability to work well and communicate with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, and employers. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team. Proven ability to oversee multiple tasks with attention to detail, prioritize, and problem-solve. PREFERRED: Master's degree in counseling, student affairs/personnel, higher education, or a related discipline. At least 2-3 years of experience working as a career counselor. Understanding of student development theories, counseling techniques, career decision-making, and job search techniques. Familiarity with the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus. Experience working with students in STEM majors. Demonstrated ability to work directly with employers to create opportunities for students and alumni. Knowledge of college recruiting best practices, including online job databases, career fairs, and on-campus recruiting. Positive, motivated, and enthusiastic work style. Demonstrated experience facilitating workshops and giving career-related presentations.
