Job Summary
This position has dual roles as both a career advisor and mentorship coordinator who will demonstrate advocacy of the values of diversity, equity and inclusion in their work. Reporting to the Director of Career Planning in the School of Public Health & Health Sciences (SPHHS), the Career Advisor and Program Coordinator provides career counseling virtually and in-person for graduate students, undergraduate students, and alumni on all aspects of their career development within the Office of Career Planning. Additionally, this position oversees the development and implementation of a school-wide mentorship program which matches SPHHS students from traditionally underrepresented communities with alumni. The Career Advisor and Program Coordinator ensures program quality and performance related to recruiting, screening, matching, monitoring, training, and supporting both students and alumni.
Essential Functions
Career Advising:
Provide comprehensive career development to individuals and groups of graduate and undergraduate students and recent alumni
Deliver 1:1 career advising through in-person, phone and virtual appointments including resume/CV/cover letter reviews, internship/job search strategy, informational interviews & networking guidance, career exploration, interview practice and coaching, and salary/offer negotiation assistance
Build relationships with departments and tailor career development activities to the needs of their students
Coach students on applying to graduate programs, gap years, fellowships post-grad internships, finding scholarships and other opportunities
Practice a market-based approach in career planning and guiding students and understand the degrees and programs offered within various health sciences and related career fields
Establish and maintain effective relationships and communication with appropriate student clubs and organizations
Review and keep updated on key industry hiring trends affecting SPHHS degree’s and provides information to students, and upon request, to faculty and administration
Collaborate with career team to identify potential employers for programs and events
Partner closely with the Office of Student Success team to develop and implement career programming and events, including new initiatives, to grow the engagement of students
Present career education concepts in classes, for student organizations and other similar requests
Establish and maintain effective relationships and communication with appropriate college faculty, staff and administration
Mentorship Coordinator:
Create and oversee implementation of an ongoing mentor recruitment plan specifically for underrepresented students, including development of an annual recruitment plans, distribution of program marketing materials, and the tracking, monitoring and evaluating of program success
Perform and oversee participant screening, training, matching, support and supervision, recognition, and closure activities
Develop and manage relationships with students, alumni and potentially employers
Manage the planning and implementation of mentor/mentee group events both virtually and in-person
Plan and implement recognition activities for program participants
Create, maintain and update the program’s policy and procedure manual as needed
Conduct surveys and other forms of evaluation to measure the success of both mentees and mentors as well as satisfaction and areas of improvement
Track and retain all correspondences, records, data and information in an organized way on Microsoft shared TEAMS folder
Other Functions
Attend staff meetings and meet regularly with the Director for one-on-ones
Support Career Planning staff as needed
Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related work experience
Strong service orientation, excellent interpersonal and advising and listening skills
Knowledge of career development challenges and opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students
Cultural competency and the ability to understand and appreciate cultural differences that affect student experience and to communicate effectively across cultures
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain positive and engaging working relationships with students
Evidence of a clear understanding of, and a commitment to working with diverse populations regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, ethnicity or disability
Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to independently prioritize work and handle multiple tasks
Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records
Ability to participate in team projects as assigned
Solid computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)
Master’s degree
Prior internship / work / volunteer experience in a college advising setting
Experience with establishing or running a mentoring program
Knowledgeable in the area of health sciences careers, specifically surrounding kinesiology, nutrition, speech language hearing, and public health sciences
Ability to speak, read and write in an additional language(s) other than English
