Position Summary
A career as a Director, Business Development will Focus on day-to-day development of opportunities across a broad spectrum of decarbonization technologies (RNG, Hydrogen, Waste to Energy, Solar, Energy Storage, Biogas). Responsible for building a queue of non-utility and utility opportunities that align with SJI investment strategies. Operate within company risk policy and procedures parameters. Work with strategy & corporate development team to analyze and react to market, competitive, and other business conditions that impact the business.
Essential Functions:
Oversee the process of identifying and originating non-utility and utility opportunities for capital investment, including M&A opportunities and organic development projects.
Oversee all aspects of the deal-making process, analysis, due diligence, and negotiation.
Analyze, benchmark and select regional markets for attractiveness for opportunities.
Oversee and negotiate partnerships and alternative business development to accelerate growth.
Determine local vs back-office vs external resource requirements together with existing resources.
Develop working knowledge of regulatory changes for opportunities to advance various market segments and create novel
Work cross-functionally with wide range of stakeholders and operating company leaders to assist in guiding deals through the SJI/IIF approval process for capital investment.
Develop individual origination business plan in order to expand the opportunity queue for SJI.
Attend industry functions to identify strategic contacts and enhance relationships with existing contacts for both existing and new customer and market potential.
Maintain sensitive and confidential information regarding corporate information and strategies.
Maintain professional competence, knowledge and skills necessary to effectively complete responsibilities; enhance job knowledge and abilities to take personal responsibility for professional development and training.
Perform responsibilities as directed within determined time frames and with a high degree of accuracy. Provide accurate input into the budget process and contribute to meet the actual targets.
Establish and maintain effective work relationships within the department and the company.
Help develop strategic partnerships and novel channel opportunities to scale unit growth.
Required Background:
• Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 11 years of relevant experience, or;• Master’s degree with 8 years of relevant experience.• In addition, a minimum of 3 years of leadership experience is required.• Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
Qualifications
Required Skills:
Extensive knowledge in renewable energy and power markets, with a general understanding of utility operations.
Established contacts across the energy landscape with a focus on emerging technologies.
Working Knowledge of environmental credit, gas and power markets and experience transacting in these markets.
Comfortable with high velocity cadence.
Ability to perform in an agile manner related to an ever-changing environment.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Knowledge of risk management tools and best practices.
General knowledge of energy derivatives.
Ability to excel under pressure and ambiguity.
Demonstrate leadership by being a self-starter and setting examples of high professionalism, job excellence and adapting to change.
High level of skill with Microsoft Suite Products.
Preferred Skills:
Outstanding communication skills.
Strategic thinker with the ability to execute at the tactical level.
