  Job Description

  This is a seasonal position. The appointment will typically start in April and end in October each year.

  Perform maintenance, repairs and follow all safety regulations over water ways and above 300', sandblasting, painting, washing, greasing, oiling, bolting, caulking, forming, cement work and inspections of the Mackinac Bridge using various tools, equipment, materials, and specialized knowledge and principles of maintenance trades. Operate a Motor Vehicle or vehicle combination with a Gross Weight Rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds when driving snowplow, blast trucks, truck mounted reachall, and water tanker trucks for snowplowing bridge plaza and bridge, getting sandblasting equipment to specific areas of the bridge, cleaning entire road deck and trusses of the bridge and reach and sandblast areas of the bridge underneath the road deck.

  One year of experience in bridge maintenance work or as a semi-skilled worker in bridge or industrial construction, including the operation of such equipment as cranes, pneumatic tools, air compressors, and concrete mixers equivalent to a Bridge Worker 6.

  Bridge Worker E8

  Two years of experience in bridge maintenance work or as a semi-skilled worker in bridge or industrial construction, including the operation of such equipment as cranes, pneumatic tools, air compressors, and concrete mixers equivalent to a Bridge Worker, including one year equivalent to a Bridge Worker 7.

  Additional Requirements and Information

  Possession of a Commercial Learner's Permit at the time of hire. Continuing employment requires possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) group A with an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within twelve months from the date of hire.

  Retirement Programs:The State of Michigan offers 401(k) and 457 plans for new hires to save for retirement.   Vacation and Sick Leave:Eligible full-time employees receive between15 and 35 personal daysand13 sick daysper year that may be rolled over to the following year if not used. Eligible employees also receive an additional day each year for community service or school functions.

  Paid Parental Leave:Eligible employees can take12 weeks of paid leaveimmediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.

  Paid Holidays:Eligible employees receive 13 or 14 paid holidays each year including New Year’s Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve and Day.

  Bonus Programs:Eligible employees with five years of service also receive annual longevity bonuses that grow as seniority increases. Some positions also may qualify for recruitment, retention, and performance bonuses or other special pay premiums.

  Military Pay Differential:Employees in the guard or reserves may also qualify for supplemental pay benefits if miliary pay during qualifying duty is less than normal state pay. Prior military service may also allow seniority credits to accelerate eligibility for longevity bonuses and additional personal leave accrual.
