  The successful candidate will serve as the Collection and Accessioning leadat the Cornell Veterinary Biobank (CVB) at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, providing technical skills and guidance to assist veterinarians and researchers. This position is responsible for coordinating sample collection, processing, data management, and training others on lab procedures.

  The CVB is an ISO 20387 accredited resource providing biological material and associated data to the research community worldwide and is a part of the Dog Aging Project. The Dog Aging Project is an innovative initiative that brings together a collaborative, interdisciplinary, nationwide team of researchers to carry out the most ambitious canine science health study in the world to improve our understanding of the aging process in both dogs and humans.

  Responsibilities include:

  Sample Collection, Accessioning, and Processing

  Assist researchers and veterinarians by explaining biobanking procedures to clients, preparing patients and supplies for sample collectionSelect and recruit appropriate cases for sample collection for researchers, clinicians, and external clients.Obtain and document participant consent, conduct sample collection, and accessioning for both internally and externally collected samples.Perform collection for blood, tissue and other specimens adhering to appropriate protocols and aseptic techniques and assist team members with sample processing as needed.Administer medications and prepare patients for medical procedures.Receive, transport, and manage biological samples, supplies, and equipment between locations, ensuring accurate sample labeling and coordination of all parties involved.Organize and prioritize the daily workflows and assignments within the lab.Coordinate schedules to ensure proper coverage for sample collection and processing.Assist team members and pathologists during postmortem collections, ensuring proper sample collection and storage, data capture, barcode scanning, as well as efficient coordination across cross-functional teams.

  Sample and Data Management

  Maintain accurate records in the biobank information management system and assist with audits to ensure database qualitySearch sample and data records to fulfill research project needsContribute to developing and updating standard operating procedures for sample tracking and database processesConduct internal and external audits related to sample storage and data processes and implement improvements to processes.

  Laboratory Operations and Quality Management

  Oversee daily workflows and assignments within the lab and ensure all tasks are completed properlyMonitor laboratory conditions and equipment, troubleshooting any issues and ensure proper storage, maintenance and waste disposal.Order, maintain inventory and oversee proper budgeting/usage of laboratory supplies and equipment.Analyze laboratory supply needs and budget expendituresEnforce compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) for quality and biobank processes based on ISO 20387, safety regulations, and CVB requirements.

  Communication and Outreach

  Serve as a shift coordinator and primary contact for scheduling sample collection activities for the Dog Aging Project - Brain Health StudyServe as training mentor to new staff, students and researchers on collection techniques, biobanking protocols, and use of equipment. Serve as resource person for questions.Provide direct technical support and advanced technical procedures; prioritize workflows for assigned cases.Create and present biobank materials at conferences, trainings, and meetings, as needed.Author and participate and provide input and recommendations for scientific papers.

  Employees of the Biobank must adhere to the CVB's Quality Assurance system, confidentiality statement, standard operating procedures, and organizational policies. Employees are expected to meet all the Cornell University Staff Skills for Success, which are essential for individual and organizational success. Employees may be required to work outside of normal business hours.

  Required Qualifications:

  Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology from an AVMA-accredited institution or its equivalent approved by the NY State Department of Education, with NYS licensure..Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding environment, effectively managing multiple tasks with competing deadlines while maintaining attention to details and documentation of process.Minimum of three years of clinical experience and willingness to learn laboratory procedures.Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office and a willingness to learn how to operate new computer applications and software.Valid driver's license.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  3 to 4 years of clinical and/or laboratory experience.Experience in the field of biobanking.Proficiency in handling or working with centrifuges, liquid nitrogen, -80C freezers, blood and tissue samples, and necropsy instruments.Familiarity and compliance with standard operating procedures for quality and biobank processes based on ISO 20387.

  Position is a one-year term with the possibility of renewal based upon funding. Can be flexible with part-time or full-time.
