About Behavioral Scientist - UPMC St. Margaret

  The Faculty/Behavioral Scientist is responsible for planning, evaluating, and supervising Resident physicians and medical and physician assistant students' training. Supervises and advises Intern and Resident physicians during their Psychiatry rotations. Monitors, evaluates, and updates both the Psychiatry and Family Medicine/Behavioral Science curriculums to meet the standards for program accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Assists Faculty in teaching Interns and Residents how to conform to the requirements of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the Residency Review Committee (RRC).

  Responsibilities:

  Supervises and trains Interns and Resident physicians in the treatment of their patients and families with psychosocial difficulties.

  Conducts the following activities in direct work with patients: - Manages the therapeutic treatment of patients with psychosocial difficulties. - Completes information on patient medical charts pertaining to therapeutic treatment of patients and consultation with Interns and Residents.

  Responsible for development and continues upgrading of a comprehensive evaluation system to include: - Intern and Resident physicians performance on clinical rotations - Program Faculty performance- Physicians performance in teaching Interns and Residents- Graduates' evaluation of the residency program- Weekly conferences presented to interns and residents

  Manages and coordinates the training of medical students, physician assistant students, and undergraduate Pre-Med. majors

  Prepares Behavioral Sciences and Psychiatry curriculum to meet the educational needs of physicians at their respective levels during their tenure in the program. Works in conjunction with the Director as well as other staff to assure that this curriculum meets the identified needs of the residents and their program. Maintains communication of activities to other supervisory personnel. Prepares other curriculum as requested by the Director.

  In conjunction with other Faculty, supervises physicians during their three years of training.

  Supervises the implementation and evaluation of orientation for first-year Intern and Resident physicians.

  Upgrades and improves teaching techniques utilized in the field of Behavioral Science so as to afford Interns and Residents with a current, as well as a comprehensive, approach to the subject.

  Acts as facilitator/mediator for interpersonal communications for all Interns and Residents, administrative staff, and Faculty.

  Coordinates activities with the Mental Health Department and Social Services Department in order to integrate and contribute to interns and residents' participation in the Behavioral Sciences. In addition, serves as liaison between residency program and these departments, as well as appropriate community, health, educational, legal, and social organizations.

  On a regular basis, attends and participates in meetings with the following individuals in order to implement new program policies, plan future goals and programming, and to review program functioning: 1) The Program Director; 2) Associate and Assistant Directors; 3) Administrative Director; and 4) Chief Resident.

  Serves as consultant referral source and provides appropriate therapeutic treatment for Intern and Resident Physicians and their families experiencing emotional difficulties or otherwise seen as impaired.

  Prepares and presents public relations and educational lectures regarding the residency program to special populations, as requested.

  Plans, supervises, and evaluates special projects as assigned by the Program Director. Advises Intern and Resident physicians as to various federal, state, and local legislation involving their practice of Medicine that is encompassed in the area of Behavioral Sciences.

  Assists Program Director with grant writing and supervision of specific grant areas as assigned and as requested.

  Must hold a Masters' Degree in Social Work or Counseling or Psychology, or Doctor of Psychology, or one of the Behavioral Sciences or related fields.

  Must hold a valid license with the Department of State, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

  Two years' experience in the field of Behavioral Science in a residency program or other medical setting. Membership in the Academy of Certified Social Workers or similar organization.

  Able to integrate a vast knowledge of treatment approaches, sociological, cultural factors, cognitive and behavioral reasons for human interaction into the aspect of medical care.

  In-depth knowledge as to the therapeutic treatment of families and individuals.

  Knowledge, understanding, and the ability to utilize the network of community resources.

  Skills in understanding and writing curriculum goals and objectives.

  Strong supervisory, management, and teaching skills.

  Ability to communicate ideas and policies orally and in writing.

  Grant writing skills; knowledge of Federal guidelines for submission of grants. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
