Automation Engineer I
The Automation Engineer role will partner with various Niagara teams to design, develop and implement complex automation solutions primarily, but not limited to, improving the efficiency of manufacturing processes. You may act as the technical lead as well as being a supporting member having hands on involvement in projects contributing to system architecture design, hardware selection, and development of software applications. You will be expected to use existing as well as emerging technologies to develop needed solutions and integrate said solutions into existing manufacturing lines and equipment.
Essential Functions
Provide technical support to internal stakeholders during the project scoping and feasibility stage of automation projects that aim to increase efficiency, increase safety, improve equipment integration or reduce cost.
Coordinate with external vendors to assess the various technical options and decide on the optimal solution that considers price, features, durability and reliability.
Design, build and test automation solutions
Travel onsite to Niagara plants to install and commission automation solutions as well as provide training.
Modify existing PLC, HMI and other control systems programs to improve integration of Niagara’s systems.
Organize plant automation documentation, such as – PLC programs, machine manuals, schematics, HMI files, etc. into a companywide Automation Vault.
Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and make recommendations to plant leadership.
Quickly develop an understanding of the function of all line equipment and their operation to be knowledgeable when troubleshooting them.
Assist in safety improvements throughout the Niagara network.
A devotion to investing the required time and effort to learn and develop new technical skills.
Actively participate in a fast-paced, team environment; ensuring that effective relationships are built and maintained.
Provide written weekly updates to team management to communicate the progress on active projects
Travel approximately 50%

Minimum Qualifications:
1-2 Years – Experience in the manufacturing field
Basic understanding of Allen Bradley and Siemens Step 7/TIA Portal programming
Basic industrial control network troubleshooting skills
Basic programming proficiency in a scripting language (eg; JavaScript, Python, Java, C# etc)
Basic knowledge of database fundamentals *experience may include a combination of work experience and education Preferred Qualifications:
All minimum qualifications with the following changes or additions
2+ Years – Experience in the manufacturing field
2+ Years – Experience in current position
Proficiency in Allen Bradley and Siemens Step 7/TIA Portal programming using ladder logic, functional programming and SCL or Structured Text
Proficiency troubleshooting industrial control networks
Proficiency working on motion control
Working knowledge in instrumentation and process control
Programming proficiency in a scripting language (eg; JavaScript, Python, Java, C# etc), performing data acquisition, manipulation and transfer using default language libraries
Working knowledge of database functionality and manipulation
Basic knowledge of Machine Learning technologies

Education
Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Industrial or Electrical Engineering, or other related field
Preferred: Master's Degree in Industrial or Electrical Engineering, or other related field
