We have an exciting opportunity for an Audio/Acoustics Engineer Intern - Space Exploration Avionics Systems to join the team with ourOperations & Test Division.
This is a temporary role not to exceed 12 weeks.
As an Audio/Acoustics Engineer Intern – Space Exploration Avionics Systems you will:
Report directly to the Electronics and Electrical Section Manager as part of a group of over 45 other Electronics and Electrical Engineers
Work with other engineers in support of the Avionics Division at NASA Johnson Space Center
Work in a laboratory environment, following standard operating procedures
Tasks include the following within the scope of the Audio domain:
Manage requirements, including integrated analysis and decomposition
Design, implement, test, and communicate audio systems
Develop documentation, including interface requirements documents, test plans, concepts of operations, and detailed specifications
Conduct trade studies to inform decision-making
Identify, communicate, and track risks, and implement mitigation strategies
Generate presentation material and review materials associated with project milestones
Maintain relationships with a diverse technical team, including personnel from engineering, safety, flight operations, crew office, and module providers
Coordinate with Audio/Acoustic Leadership team for all activities above
Perform other duties as required
Here's What You'll Need:
Requisition Qualifications:
Currently enrolled at an accredited university
Completed at least 45 credit hours
Minimum of 2.8 GPA
Prior employment, internship, or upper division lab-work with electronics design experience
Strong interest in Audio/Acoustic Engineering for space-exploration
Understanding of acoustics and electro-acoustics (fields, absorption, waveguides, transducers)
University project experience in audio, acoustic or electronics design
Must be dependable, highly motivated and self-directed with a growth mindset, strong aptitude and eagerness to learn new skills along with an aptitude to grow and develop within the field
Capable of taking direction and improvement feedback from team lead, mentors, section managers and project managers
Capacity to understand technical subjects and strong ability to research/solve problems
Initiative to embrace the work and strong sense of ownership
Strong time management, organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and in a team
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong analytical and mathematic skills
Demonstrated leadership skills
Requisition Preferences:
One to Two semesters away from graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Physics degree from an accredited program.
Courses in signal processing and or acoustics (radar or sonar also good)
Familiarity with Audio processing equipment, Acoustic Lab electronics and field0test/measurement equipment (Audio analyzers, function generators, TEF, anechoic chamber, speakers, audio/power amplifiers, filters, directional microphones, beam-forming array microphones, microphone pre-amps, mixers, recorders, equalizers, cross-overs, pistonphones, accelerometers and calibration, etc…)
Familiarity with 1/n octave band Real Time Analyzer (RTA)
Understanding of sound measurement techniques (Sound level meters and standards)
Understanding of psychoacoustics and human hearing (linear vs. A-weighting, loudness/NC curves, masking and effects of noise)
Understanding of microphone and loudspeaker sensitivity, directivity, etc.
Understanding of acoustic absorption, noise control/reduction, acoustic echo cancelation, speech processing, enhancement and recognition techniques
Understanding of acoustic field modeling/simulation and control techniques
Basic electronic design, analysis, troubleshooting, and electrical/radio noise (ground loops, induction, others)
Experience with Data collection and Analysis (time-series, filtering, correlation, power spectra)
Time and frequency-domain data analysis
Familiarity with MATLAB/OCTAVE, SYSNOISE acoustics and COMSOL multiphysics software or similar
Familiarity with audio editing software (e.g. Audacity)
Experience with C/C++, Python programming
Experience with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and FPGA device/programming
Experience with signal processing algorithm programming (digital filters, adaptive algorithms, compression/encoding, etc…)
Familiarity with TI Code Composer Studio Integrated Development Environment
Familiarity with architecture of TI 67xx DsP family
Familiarity with TI DSP McASP digital interface
Understanding of I2S digital audio standards
Familiarity with Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
Proficient in MS Office programs, particularly MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Word,OneNote and Outlook
