  Immunology is a new and fast-growing therapeutic area at Lilly. Over the last seven years, we have developed important new therapeutics with four approved medicines that are best in disease, and a deep mid-stage pipeline. External innovation has played a meaningful role in our initial efforts in Immunology and will grow in importance in the coming years as we look to grow the therapeutic area and develop breakthrough medicines.

  Purpose of the job:

  The External Innovation Lead for Immunology will head a team responsible for driving our strategy to license in several important new medicines and pursue strategic acquisitions that move Lilly into world leader status in Immunology. The successful candidate will work closely with senior leaders of Immunology in LRL and the Immunology Business Unit as well as scientists, clinicians, and the business development team. A capacity for establishing robust relationships both within and outside the organization, a strong understanding of operational and strategic drivers of successful collaborations, and an ability to lay out and realize different models of external collaboration are key to success in this role. This position may lead 1-3 team members.

  Responsibilities:

  The Associate Vice President for Immunology External R&D will collaborate with our Immunology R&D leaders to establish and implement our strategy.

  This individual will lead ateamresponsibleforcoordinating our Immunology external search and evaluation efforts to identify programs that will complement our internal portfolio with innovative agents, technologies, platforms or targets that have potential to address critical unmet patient needs.

  The Associate VP needs to have a broad understanding of our internal clinical, discovery and technology portfolios in order tobeableto identify and prioritize high-value external possibilities.

  They will also need tobeableto demonstrate a clear understanding of the regulatory environments, pharmaceutical standards of care in the target markets, critical relationships, and emergingtechnologies to provide Lilly with competitive access to potentialopportunities of strategic interest.

  Lead the identification and thorough objective assessment of possible in-licensing opportunities, identification of key issues and appropriate expertise to facilitate resolution.

  Understand and effectively use the external competitive landscapes for target areas.

  Lead and/or engage in visits to external companies with senior leadership, functional groups, business development, and diligence team members. Leadership in thedevelopmentof project concepts and execution of these projects when working with externalgroups.

  Lead the communication of the results of technical evaluations to internal and external partners. Lead thedevelopmentof relationships within the external pharmaceutical community including in pharma and biotech companies, research institutes, academic and other scientific organizations.

  Ensure integration of efforts through strict goal setting, effective teamwork, performance management, collaboration with Lilly groups and acommitment to serving customers both through the BU’s, therapeutic areas and outside the Company.

  Critical thinking and planning related to target molecules, platforms and pipelines.

  Anticipate the evolution of the competition to gain advantage as it pertains to innovation acquisition and collaborations.

  Development and maintenance of portfolio projects.

  Coach and mentor team member(s), including performance management planning and development, as well as career coaching/mentoring and development.

  Basic Qualifications:

  Doctoraldegree (PhD) in Pharmaceutical Life Science, e.g. Biochemistry, Immunology, Pharmacology or related field

  OR Medical Degree (MD)

  Minimumof7yearsofexperience in the pharmaceutical or related industry with a strong background of scientific successes

  Additional Preferences :

  Demonstrated Scientific knowledge of Pharmaceutical Drug Discovery, Clinical Development and Intellectual Property Processes.

  Strong analyticalskills and the abilitytocommunicatecomplex information and analyses to a variety of scientific and non-scientific audiences.

  Strong interpersonal & leadershipskills and ability to represent Lilly in a highlyprofessional manner.

  Strongorganizationalskills and demonstratedabilityto multitask efficiently and prioritize quickly.

  Strong oral and written communication skills.

  Strong problemsolving, project management and leadershipskills.

  Experience working in a matrix environment as well as leading and demonstrating the matrix.

  Demonstratedabilityto work independently as well as in highly integrated cross functional teams.

  Demonstrated strong database and computerskills.
