About Associate Editor, Dutton (Nonfiction)

  Associate Editor, Dutton, Nonfiction

Nonfiction Editorial at Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Publishing Group, seeks an Associate Editor to join the team. The Associate Editor will provide editorial and administrative support for the VP/Editor-in-Chief of Dutton, Plume, and Tiny Reparations while building a nonfiction list, specializing in books that reach audiences interested in sports, politics, pop culture, science, history, music, biography, and more. A small list with a huge audience, Dutton is a boutique imprint within the largest English-language publisher in the world. Recent titles have become bestsellers, been national book club picks, and won the National Book Award. Publicity—and marketing—driven, its focused list of sixty books per year is made up of half fiction and half nonfiction titles. Dutton’s imprints include Plume and Tiny Reparations Books. Dutton’s current bestselling and award-winning nonfiction authors include Sean Carroll, Martin Dugard, Scott Ellsworth, Andre Iguodala, Annie Jacobsen, Jonathan Karl, Patrick Kennedy, Alex Kershaw, Denise Kiernan, Anna Lembke, Des Linden, Nick Offerman, Joe Posnanski, Jim Sciutto, Jeff Tweedy, Jazmine Ulloa, Alan Weisman, Elizabeth Williamson, Timothy Winegard, Carl Zimmer, and more. Our ideal candidate will share Dutton’s priorities: identifying and amplifying authors who are the best fits with their subjects, working on discussable books from a wide variety of voices that speak to current readers and their interests, and prioritizing books that are compelling to read. The Associate Editor will have a strong history of editing, shepherding, and acquiring books that have kept core readers interested and attracted new audiences. We are looking for someone who is an innovative and creative thinker and wants to discover and create new directions in nonfiction. The Associate Editor will be fully involved in the publishing process, from submissions through production and publication for the Editor-in-Chief, and have the opportunity to build their own unique and outstanding list in the marketplace on the Dutton nonfiction editorial team. The position of Associate Editor at Dutton is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities, which include but are not limited to author, agent, and team meetings, mailings, and other tasks. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA). For consideration, please apply by February 9, 2024, using our ATS system and include your cover letter and resume, as well as your acquisitions list and your industry contacts list.

  The Role:

  • Editing manuscript drafts for and with the Editor in Chief.

  • Growing agent relationships, generating book ideas, acquiring nonfiction titles, and building a list.

  • Drafting title information sheets and descriptive copy, and updating online metadata.

  • Providing administrative support to the Editor in Chief including routing contract and payment requests, generating profit and loss statements, maintaining deadlines, filing expense reports, and fielding questions from authors and literary agents.

  The Essentials:

  • Minimum three years working in trade editorial publishing; nonfiction background or interest is a plus

  • Passion for and strong interest in discussable nonfiction that creates conversations, across journalism, sports, politics, science, history, music, biography, pop culture, and more

  • Deep curiosity about issues, ideas, and storytelling

  • Superb verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience tutoring or mentoring

  • Experience with group presentations

  • Comfort prioritizing multiple assignments in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
