About Associate Controller

  Under the direction of the AVP for Finance & Controller, the Associate Controller is responsible for effective management of all aspects of accounting and financial reporting for the Institution. Responsibilities include coordinating all accounting functions of general ledger, long-term bonds, fixed assets, endowment funds, and cash management. The position is responsible for preparing the annual financial statements, tax returns (990, 990-T), and bond compliance.

  The position acts as the primary liaison with external and internal auditors, coordinator of the financial year end close, as well as the annual external audit. The position participates in institution-wide initiatives, providing financial expertise to various levels of management in the organization.

  This position requires a broad-based knowledge of all areas of accounting and financial reporting and responsibilities include:

  Provide leadership to accounting staff giving direction and guidance to direct reports, delegating assignments, reviewing staff productivity, and mentoring staff to ensure high quality accounting and financial reporting.

  Builds and maintains mutually supportive relationships with all levels of management, faculty, staff, outside agencies, and vendors.

  Manages and coordinates the year end closing process and the preparation of the institution's annual financial statements including related footnotes and MD&A.

  Liaison with external auditors on annual financial statements.

  Develops and executes the vision for the accounting function which includes identifying and implementing process improvements.

  Maintains thorough working knowledge of the institution's financial management ERP system to ensure staff have the required knowledge needed for their area of responsibility.

  Responsible for accurate and timely posting of transactions to the general ledger while ensuring fiscal integrity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and University policies and procedures.

  Reviews, maintains, and assists in developing effective internal control structures for all assigned functions.

  Primary liaison for all external financial reporting including the institution-wide IPEDS report.

  Advises the AVP on financial, accounting and auditing matters.

  Responsible for the annual tax returns for the University and its component units.

  Responsible for writing and maintaining documentation of university accounting policies and procedures.

  Stays current and implements new pronouncements of accounting standards and other regulatory issues affecting accounting procedures, financial reporting, governmental funding, and audit issues.

  Deliver quality customer services to both internal and external constituents in a professional helpful and courteous manner.

  Other duties as assigned.

  Minimum Qualifications

  Bachelor's degree is required in accounting or related field with relevant experience, CPA or MBA preferred.

  At least seven years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified with a minimum of five years of progressive leadership experience.

  Must be self-motivated and a highly detailed oriented problem solver with strong analytical skills and the ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.

  Must have an open and collaborative style of leadership that encourages teamwork and cooperation, and be a strong role model, manager, and coach.

  Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner.

  Strong organizational, oral & written communication, and technical skills with attention to detail.

  Knowledge of GASB financial reporting requirements, non-profit/governmental fund accounting.

  Prior experience in a higher education preferred.
