About Assistant Professor of Violin

  Concordia College (Moorhead, Minnesota), seeks a full-time Assistant Professor of Violin to start August 19, 2024, for a three-year term with the possibility of renewal. A master s degree in violin performance or a related field is required; a doctorate (or ABD) is preferred. Teaching and performance experience appropriate for teaching at the collegiate level is also expected. The successful candidate will lead the violin studio (both music majors and non-majors), teach applied violin lessons, string literature/pedagogy, and coach chamber music. Other duties may include teaching upper string techniques, leadership of Concordia s String Preparatory Program, and/or other areas of the candidate s interest and department need. The successful candidate will collaborate with string area colleagues in continuing to build and position Concordia as one of the premier 21st century orchestral programs of the Upper Midwest by attracting, recruiting and retaining talented undergraduate students from across the country; share in organizing and implementing string area initiatives that engage music students and music teachers in the Fargo-Moorhead region, throughout the Upper Midwest, and nation-wide (such as Concordia s North Star Chamber Music Festival and Symposium, a five-day chamber music program for students and string music educators from the region; or Concordia s Honor String Orchestra Festival, a weekend for high school string players from across the country); contribute to campus service, including committee service and academic advising; and maintain an active and visible performance schedule. The successful candidate will also hold unique musical and teaching skills that will complement and further advance Concordia s vision for the relevant 21st-century musician; bring versatility, innovation, and imagination to shaping the upper string area; exemplify a collaborative musician, teacher, and colleague; exhibit strong interpersonal skills to further elevate the music department s level of performance and community engagement; and promote diversity and inclusive practices in programming, instruction, and recruitment on behalf of the studio, department, and college. In support of the College s ambitious goals for diversity and inclusion, the Music Department is interested in applicants who will contribute to the development of an increasingly diverse campus community and have experience working effectively with diversified populations and responding to the changing demands on emerging music educators and professionals. The successful candidate will aspire to be part of a community that affirms an abundance of identities, experiences, and perspectives in order to imagine, examine, and implement possibilities for individual and communal thriving both inside and outside of the Music Department. Concordia College is NASM accredited and the Music Department is the largest single department on campus, with 40 faculty and more than 1/4 of the entire student body participating in vocal and instrumental lessons and ensembles. The department maintains an excellent reputation throughout the region, with over 150 students majoring in music (music education, composition, or performance) each year, many of whom pursue careers in music education, while others pursue graduate school and/or careers in performing or creative activity. The post-graduation employment rate for music education majors pursuing jobs in the field is extremely high, and many graduates go on to achieve graduate degrees at leading national institutions. Home to the EMMY award and American Prize-winning Concordia Orchestra, Concordia s orchestral program currently consists of two full symphony orchestras, and has been lauded for its exciting, diverse, and relevant programming, expressive and committed playing, and nuanced string sound. Concordia College is a private, co-educational, baccalaureate libera arts college of approximately 2,000 students and 150 faculty. The college is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and prepares students to become responsible leaders in the global society. It is located in the Moorhead (MN)/Fargo (ND) area, a growing metropolitan area of 235,000, consistently ranked among the nation s most livable cities. Fargo-Moorhead s thriving cultural scene is home to a variety of professional arts organizations including its own opera, ballet and theatre companies, symphony orchestra, film festival, and art museums and galleries.
