Position: Assistant or Associate Professor, Full-Time Tenure-TrackFaculty Position in Applied Ethology and Welfare in the Department ofAnimal Sciences (45% Research \| 20% Teaching \| 35% Extension)
Description: This position is available through a strategicdepartmental hiring plan to expand research and education to providesafe, reliable food for a growing world population and promote animalhealth and well-being. This position will focus on applied ethology andwelfare of swine. Advances in the area of applied ethology will improveswine health, production efficiency, and welfare. Next-generationsystems for producing pork must be efficient, ecologically sustainable,and socially acceptable; understanding swine behavior is necessary forachieving this goal. This position provides an exciting opportunity forsomeone interested in conducting research motivated by a strong desireto interact with the pork industry in areas of efficiency,sustainability and animal welfare. The person hired will develop anationally and internationally recognized, extramurally funded researchand extension program, collaborate across disciplines and with industrypartners to seek practical solutions to questions which have economic,social, and moral implications to stakeholders including consumers, andcontribute to the department\'s academic programs. This position buildson our history and ongoing research in genetics, nutrition, meatscience, precision management, immune and reproductive physiology,microbiology and animal systems with application to livestock andbiomedical research.
Qualifications: Required qualifications for assistant professorcandidates include (1) Ph.D. degree in animal science or relevant fieldby the start date; (2) research emphasis on swine behavior/welfare; (3)potential to develop an extramurally funded research and extensionprogram; and (4) commitment to teaching and mentoring students. Requiredqualifications for associate professor candidates include (1) Ph.D.degree in animal science or relevant field; (2) research emphasis onswine behavior/welfare; (3) strong record of publication and commitmentto swine industry; (4) demonstrated ability to secure extramuralfunding; and (5) commitment to teaching and mentoring students.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop a nationallyand internationally recognized research and extension program supportedby extramural funding, contribute to academic programs related toapplied swine behavior and welfare, and perform other services expectedat an academic institution.
Proposed Start Date: August 16, 2024
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
