Job Summary
Provide support in the daily operation of the veterinary care programand the facility management of laboratory animal facilities maintainedby the Animal Care Program (ACP).
Duties Responsibilities
Provide clinical and preventive care of research animals, includingemergency care (weekend, after hours, and holidays).Consult with faculty, researchers and research staff on veterinarycare, animal-related issues and regulatory issues.Provide technical support and teaching to researchers and theirlaboratory staff.Manage animal care facilities, equipment and other requiredresources to provide animal care and research support.Provide veterinarian oversight of satellite facilities.Serve on the IACUC as required, participate in protocol review,semiannual inspections, program reviews, policy revisions and postapproval monitoring.Review biosafety protocols and participate in biosafety audits.Provide mentoring of post-doctoral research associate and indirectsupervision of veterinary technicians, animal facility coordinators,and animal care staff (civil service).Mentor and assign tasks and participate in interview processes.Develop and implement comprehensive intramural training/educationalprograms for faculty, staff and students utilizing animals inresearch, teaching and/or testing.Assist with the development and implementation of standard operatingprocedures (SOPs) for laboratory animal facilities and in thedevelopment of animal care policy and procedure to meet programobjectives.Teach veterinary students during formal class sessions and/orsupervised rotations within the department.Provide administrative support to the Associate Director(s) andDirector.Serve on campus or external committees as required. Otherresponsibilities as required or assigned.Minimum Qualifications
Minimum DVM or equivalent from an AVMA accredited veterinary school.Minimum of two years laboratory animal clinical experience.Completion of an ACLAM recognized training program in laboratoryanimal medicine or equivalent experience.Current license to practice veterinary medicine in at least onestate and ability to obtain an Illinois license within 6 months ofhire.USDA accreditation or ability to acquire accreditation within a yearof hire.Preferred Qualifications
ACLAM board certification.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws relating tothe use of animals in research and teaching.Ability to foster constructive relationships with administrators,faculty, staff, students and other constituencies.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Ability to effectively and productively work both as a teammember/leader and independently.Demonstrated ability to perform efficiently with a professionaldemeanor in a fast-paced work environmen with multiple and changingpriorities and tasks.Good organizational skills.Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after theclose date. The budgeted salary range for the position is $110,000 -$135,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualificationsand experience, while also considering internal equity.
